The Department of Family Medicine and Primary Care is looking to employ a passionate, committed academic to coordinate, teach and assess on a suite of innovative courses which introduce first-year health science students to concepts of health, the nature of science and the South African health care system. These courses integrate the disciplines of family medicine, public health, health systems science, health psychology, health sociology and medical and health humanities, focusing particularly on experiential learning and practical application of knowledge and theoretical concepts.
We aim to capacitate students with the systems-thinking and understanding of the interdependence of the multiple components that form the South African health care system, to adopt design-based, cutting-edge approaches and solutions that complement their role as socially and critically conscious advocates for quality care at individual, community and population level.
Main purpose of the job
The main purpose of this position is to coordinate and deliver teaching and assessments for the first-year MBBCh Foundations of Public Health and Health Systems Science course in semester 1 (FAMH1003A) and the BHSc Health Systems Science 1 course in semester 2 (FAMH1001A).
Brief description
Key performance areas
· Coordination, teaching, assessment and administrative activities for the two courses as allocated by the Head of Department. This will involve liaising with students, staff and administrators in the relevant Schools and Departments involved in the courses
· Delivery of learning events and assessments as allocated by the Head of Department
· Serve on School, Faculty and University committees as necessary, including the relevant curriculum committees and 1st-year working party committee
· Participate in individual and departmental research activities
· Take part in self-development and further education activities as appropriate
· Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research as appropriate
Minimum requirements for the position
· Health Professions degree or Masters (or equivalent) qualification in a health-related field
· At least three years’ experience teaching in a health-related field in a higher education institution and/or three years’ experience of teaching and working in a discipline related to the course content
· Excellent knowledge and experience of the South African health services

· Good interpersonal skills, tactful, respectful, non-judgmental and punctual
