Position Overview
Utrecht University invites applications for a Junior Embryologist / IVF Technician within the Reproduction Team of the Equine Clinic. The position also involves research activities with the Reproductive Genetics team.
You will support a dynamic clinical program in in vitro production and preservation of horse embryos, including:
- Oocyte recovery and maturation
- Sperm preparation and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
- Embryo culture, micromanipulation, and cryopreservation
- Thawing of embryos for transfer to recipient mares
- Administrative support related to clinical procedures
You will also contribute to developing a non-invasive preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) system for equine embryos. During the horse breeding season (March–August), you will participate in a 1-in-4 rota for embryo thawing on weekends and public holidays.
Beyond clinical duties, you will support the teaching and research activities of the team, focusing on solutions for infertility in animals and humans.
Candidate Profile
Required Qualifications and Skills:
- HLO (Hoger Laboratorium Onderwijs) degree or relevant biological/biomedical background
- Proven interest in assisted reproductive technologies (ART) and preimplantation genetic testing
- Affinity for developmental biology, molecular biology, and genetics
- Demonstrated skills in biomolecular, biochemical, and cell/tissue culture techniques
- Excellent teamwork, communication, and independent problem-solving abilities
- Enthusiasm, creativity, and ability to thrive in a multidisciplinary environment
- Commitment to staying updated with scientific literature
- Proficiency in written and spoken English

- Contract: 1-year appointment with potential extension
- Working Hours: 38 hours/week
- Salary: €3,029 – €3,623 gross/month (CAO NU, scale 6 or 7)

About the Faculty and Department
The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine trains veterinarians and researchers, provides animal care, and conducts research addressing health and welfare for animals, humans, and the environment.
The Department of Clinical Sciences includes ~150 veterinarians and a similar number of support staff. The team is responsible for veterinary education, clinical services for horses and companion animals, and research in regenerative medicine, locomotion, genetics, and reproduction.
