Junior Neuroscience - Medical Faculty Open Rank (Basic) - MCBS

FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The City University of New York (CUNY) School of Medicine (SoM) is the only medical school in the CUNY system. Our innovative curriculum allows students to complete both their undergraduate Bachelor of Science (BS) and Doctor of Medicine (MD) degrees in seven years. CUNY SoM graduated its first MD class in 2020. In addition, the CUNY SoM offers a two-year Physician Assistant (PA) program to prepare health professionals licensed to practice medicine with physician supervision. Our mission is 1) to provide access to medical education to talented youth from historically underrepresented in backgrounds in medicine and to develop health professionals committed to practicing in under-served communities and 2) to perform innovative research in community health and biomedicine.

The Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Biomedical Sciences (MCBS) at the CUNY SoM invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Medical Professor (Basic Science) or Associate Medical Professor (Basic Science). We seek a productive neuroscientist who complements departmental strengths in systems and molecular neuroscience, which includes the neural basis of neurodegeneration, motor control, neural circuit development, and spinal cord and traumatic brain injury. We are particularly interested in candidates using molecular and genomic approaches to investigate these research topics to inform the mechanisms of neurological diseases and neuro-developmental disorders.

The successful candidate will be expected to establish and maintain a robust, externally funded research program in neuroscience. Responsibilities also include active participation in medical and graduate student education, as well as engagement in institutional service at the departmental, school, and university levels. A demonstrated ability-or clear potential-to develop interdisciplinary collaborations both within and beyond the department is essential.

In addition to the responsibilities outlined above, the faculty member's duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve as Principal Investigator for neuroscience-related research, leading efforts in laboratory development, experimental design, and project execution.
  • Develop and establish a new research program or further an existing neuroscience research initiative at CUNY.
  • Obtain and sustain extramural funding at the national level to support research activities.
  • Contribute to the Department’s academic mission through teaching, mentoring, and curriculum development as needed.
  • Participate in departmental service responsibilities, including committees and other governance activities.
  • Engage in service at both the institutional (CUNY) and school (CUNY SoM) levels to support shared governance and strategic initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A doctoral degree (Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent) in neuroscience or a closely related biomedical field is required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to teach successfully at the medical and/or graduate level.
  • Demonstrated scholarship or professional achievement in the candidate's area of expertise.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and collegially with colleagues, students, and institutional partners in support of the university’s mission.
  • Depending on level of experience, a demonstrable track record of research productivity, including a history of high-impact, peer-reviewed publications and a record of securing external funding, particularly from federal or other governmental agencies.
