Offer Description
Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is one of the largest universities in Germany. With its location in the vibrant Rhine-Main science region, the university can exploit its full potential and showcase its innovative power and dynamics. Its status as a comprehensive university fosters multidisciplinary learning and teaching, in turn paving the way for its internationally renowned, interdisciplinary research. Almost all of its faculties and departments are located on a single campus close to the Mainz city center, creating a lively academic culture for researchers, teaching staff, and students from all over the world.
The Institute of Physics at the Faculty of Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science invites applications for the position of
Junior Professor (Tenure Track) of Experimental Solid-State Physics with a Focus on Spin Physics
salary grade W1 LBesG (civil servant with a fixed-term contract) with tenure track to W2 (permanent professorship)
to be filled at the earliest possible date.
Tasks and expectations:
We are seeking a candidate who has demonstrated initial scientific achievements in research and the ability to conduct independent research at a high international level, and whose research focus lies in a current area of experimental spin physics related to solid-state physics.
Spin-related research is a highly successful focus area at JGU, which boasts excellent infrastructure (a technology platform featuring nanofabrication and characterization, spectroscopy, a helium liquefier for low-temperature experiments, etc.) and a number of coordinated research projects in which participation is encouraged. We also expect active involvement in the application process for future projects. The candidate will represent the field of spin physics in selected areas that fit within the overall scope of activities in this field.
Participation in coordinated research networks such as the Collaborative Research Center SFB/TRR 173 Spin+X, the top-level research area TopDyn – Dynamics and Topology – and possibly other coordinated research projects enables cooperative research in a active environment with excellent equipment. Collaboration with cooperation partners, such as groups at the Institutes of Physics and Chemistry and within the framework of the Rhine-Main Universities alliance (RMU) and RPTU in Kaiserslautern is expected.
Involvement with other programs, such as the Max Planck Graduate Center with Johannes Gutenberg-University or the Spin Phenomena Interdisciplinary Center is possible.
The holder of the position will take part in the general teaching assignments of the faculty. The candidates are therefore expected to possess the necessary teaching skills and demonstrate the appropriate level of commitment. In addition to that, we expect appropriate participation in the academic self-administration. Courses in the master’s degree of Physics are in English. The holder of the position is thus expected to possess the necessary English language skills. Also expected is the willingness to eventually offer courses in German after the tenure evaluation.
