Junior Professor (W1, tenure track W2) in Preservation and Care at the Faculty of Architecture This is a tenure-track junior professorship leading to a tenured W2 position. We are inviting applications for a junior professor position in the area of preservation and care, to be filled as soon as possible. The professorship role will be required to formulate innovative research perspectives on the conservation of historic buildings and existing structures and to develop them further in relation to the topics of the climate and resource crisis, sustainability and societal change. The key content of the role will include reflection on and teaching of the cultural, technical and design-related methods and practices that are suited to the conservation and maintenance of historic buildings and existing structures. Possible focal areas for research are: pre-modern building practices as a reservoir of knowledge for sustainable building; documentation and evaluation of post-war modernism and more recent building stock; practices used in the conversion, extension, repair and maintenance of buildings, including those that are not listed buildings; preserving buildings with materials such as concrete, plastics and construction elements such as semi-finished products, pre-fabricated components and building systems. At RWTH Aachen University with its interdisciplinary focus, in particular in the focus area of Built and Lived Environment, it is intended that the professorship will make a key contribution to the formulation of innovative architectural questions in regard to existing structures. In the degree programs for Bachelor and Master of Architecture, the professorship is involved in the basic teaching in the field of “Cultural and Historical Basics” and offers projects and elective subjects; this is also the case in the Master’s degree program in Urban Planning. Prerequisites are a completed university degree in Architecture or a related discipline, particular proficiency in scientific work, which as a rule will be evidenced by a PhD of a very high standard, a strong focus on research and some practical experience in the conservation of historic buildings and/or existing structures. Teaching ability and dedication are essential and the application should include proof of this. Fluent German is not required to start the position but the successful candidate will be expected to hold classes in German within the first 5 years.
