Starting date is as soon as possible. The position is initially limited to three years with the possibility of extension for an additional year, subject to continued funding by third-party sponsors.
This position in the field of data-driven system models/digital twins for medicine and life sciences is to be filled in cooperation with GEORG AUGUST UNIVERSITY OF GÖTTINGEN and the Lower Saxony Research Center for Artificial Intelligence and Causal Methods in Medicine (CAIMed). We are looking for a committed and outstanding junior research group leader for the newly established research group “Data-driven Digital Twins.”
Junior Research Group Resources:
- Funding for two staff members (TV-L E13, 100%) for three years each
- Budget for travel and other costs
- Administrative support through the central CAIMed office in Göttingen
- Access to the excellent research infrastructure of the Göttingen Campus
Research Focus
The research group will focus on modern AI methods for generating digital twins from biological and medical data. The goal is to contribute to knowledge generation in the life sciences through innovative approaches. Possible (but not exclusive) research areas may include:
- Development of data-driven models of biological and medical systems
- Integration of simulation methods with machine learning and AI
- Hybrid modeling approaches that combine biophysical or biomechanical knowledge with data-driven methods
- Applications in personalized medicine and precision diagnostics
Thematic alignment with the CAIMed center (https://caimed.de) as well as the Göttingen research landscape (CIDAS, EKFZ for optogenetic therapies, University Medical Center Göttingen) is desired.
Your Profile
Technical Qualifications:
- Completed university degree in computer science, mathematics, physics, computational neuroscience, biomedical engineering, or related disciplines. A completed or nearly completed doctorate in one of the above-mentioned fields is an advantage.
- Excellent publication record (relative to academic age) in leading international journals and/or conferences
- Demonstrated expertise in at least one of the following areas:
- Deep Learning and modern AI architectures
- Computational Modeling and Simulation
- Physics-informed Machine Learning
- Data-driven biophysical or biomechanical modeling
- Neural Differential Equations or similar hybrid approaches
- Biological or medical data analysis
Personal Competencies:
- Strong motivation to build and lead an independent research group
- Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary collaboration
- Team skills and leadership competence
- Excellent communication skills in English
- Commitment to supervising and mentoring doctoral students

About CAIMed
The Lower Saxony Research Center for Artificial Intelligence and Causal Methods in Medicine (CAIMed) is a newly founded interdisciplinary research center with the goal of achieving breakthroughs in medical research and clinical practice through innovative AI methods and causal inference. CAIMed connects expertise from computer science, mathematics, medicine, and life sciences at the Göttingen and Hannover sites.
