Junior Research Specialist
The junior research specialist position is in the Razani lab in the Department of Dermatology at UC San Francisco. We are a basic immunology laboratory that studies how the immune system functions in both mouse skin. We seek to understand how innate immune signaling dysregulation modulates both skin inflammation and inflammation in adjacent organs such as the joints. These questions have special relevance to the pathogenesis of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis.
Applicants who intend to participate in research before applying to graduate school are encouraged to apply. The specialist will perform molecular biology (nucleic acid extraction, PCR, animal genotyping, Western blot) and immunology techniques (flow cytometry, ex vivo cell stimulation, microscopy). In addition, the specialist will assist with animal experiments (handling, anesthesia, injections, colony maintenance, breeding, euthanasia, tissue harvesting, simple surgery). Additional tasks include ordering and stocking laboratory supplies and assisting with general laboratory maintenance and compliance. Department Description The mission of the Department of Dermatology is to be a world leader in the care of patients with skin diseases through outstanding clinical service, education, training, and research.
Required Qualifications:
- Attention to detail and ability to clearly document experiments.
- Organizational skills with ability to work independently and assess need for interaction with supervising researcher.
- Written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to adhere to all campus safety policies.
- Demonstrated motivation and conscientiousness.
- Scientific curiosity and a desire to contribute.
- Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) or at least four years of research experience.
- Candidates must meet the requirements by the time of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous laboratory research experience.
- Experience with animal handling.
- Education: knowledge of molecular biology and genetics.
Licensure/Certification/Registration: None required. Physical Requirements: * Good visual acuity and accurate color discrimination. * The position requires excellent manual dexterity and familiarity utilizing delicate instrumentation. * Occasionally lifts and/or carries objects weighing up to 20 pounds. * Work involves possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances. * Long periods of standing and/or sitting.
