Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting two Kaiārahi Eke Panuku Matua - Senior Student Success Advisers to join the Tītoko - Centre for Student Success team on a permanent, full-time basis.

The Kaiārahi Eke Panuku Matua - Senior Student Success Adviser provides holistic student advice and high-quality responsive service to support student academic success and enhance the student experience within the framework of the University’s academic policies, regulations, and operating procedures.

Key responsibilities:

  • Advising an assigned student cohort group using best practice case management principles.
  • Identifying barriers facing students by utilising equity, diversity and inclusion policies, practices, and behaviours that lead to student success.
  • Providing ongoing interaction with students throughout the trimester, particularly at key momentum points, and monitoring to ensure early awareness of students who are facing particularly significant barriers to success.
  • Developing and maintaining a good understanding of relevant University regulations, policies, procedures, and services.
  • Mentor Student Success Advisers through challenges, understanding processes, interpreting statutes, and leading by example.
  • Support with training and the development needs of the team.

We’re seeking a senior, student focused leader who brings initiative, sound judgment, and a high level of administrative and policy expertise. You will play a key role in ensuring our students receive exceptional support and that our processes are delivered to a consistently high standard.

You’ll be an influential communicator with excellent interpersonal skills—someone who builds strong relationships across the university and represents the service with credibility. You’ll balance autonomy with effective teamwork, providing steady leadership in a fast-paced environment.

Strong planning, time management, and the ability to remain composed under pressure are essential, as is confidence working with a diverse range of stakeholders to achieve the best outcomes for students.

Key requirements:

  • Tertiary degree, or comparable professional experience in a similar role.
  • Demonstrated client centred approach and service delivery skills.
  • Proven ability to proactively navigate and manage issues to a successful resolution.
  • Highly developed communication skills, with the ability to express complex matters in an accurate and concise form, both orally and in writing.
  • Sound understanding of academic statutes and student academic processes.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team situation and support less experienced team members.
  • An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its application in an educational context.
