About us/Mō mātou

The role/Te mahi

Under contract to the Ministry of Education, learning area assessments for the Curriculum Insights and Progress Study will be conducted during Term 3 of the 2026 school year in 160 randomly-selected schools across Aotearoa New Zealand.

EARU employs teachers from across New Zealand to administer the programme, over a ten week period. In 2026, the programme will commence with a one week training programme in Wellington (20-24 July), followed by nine weeks of school visits. Kairangahau Kaiako|Teacher Researchers will work in pairs and depending on the area, may be required to undertake substantial travel away from home, with regular trips for up to a week at a time (travel expenses are covered).

This year, the study will be assessing Year 3, Year 6 and Year 8 students in health and physical education, and learning languages with a focus on te reo Māori.

Kairangahau Kaiako|Teacher Researchers will be either seconded from their school for the 10 week period or employed on a fixed-term contract with the University of Otago.

Working alongside our team to implement the assessment programme is a great PLD opportunity and applications are now open for effective and committed teachers nationwide.

Skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako

We are seeking teachers:

•    Who are experienced in teaching at primary and/or intermediate levels (Years1-8);

•    With curriculum interests, responsibilities or skills in health and physical education, and/or learning languages with a focus on te reo Māori;

•    Who are confident and competent te reo Māori speakers;

•    Who are able to clearly demonstrate cultural responsiveness to, and affinity with, children from diverse backgrounds, particularly Māori and Pasifika;

•    Who can communicate and establish relationships effectively with children, teachers, and parents;

•    Who can follow procedures and work accurately with attention to detail;

•    Who can work confidently with digital technology and new software.

If already employed by a school, teachers will be seconded; if a relief teacher, a fixed-term contract will be offered.

The salary range for this position is a follows:

If fixed-term, this will be on the Teaching and Professional Practice Fellow 1 scale $75,727 to $87,849.

If seconded, this will be on your existing school salary, and include management units if applicable.
