The Kansas City (KC) Regional Counselor will maintain a primary residence in the Kansas City metropolitan area and have primary responsibility for recruiting new first-year students, including transfer and graduate populations, when applicable.
This position is responsible for assisting students from the Kansas City metropolitan area and surrounding counties, as well as some recruitment in other states, through all stages of the recruitment and enrollment process.
This position involves extensive travel (upward of 18 to 20 weeks annually) within the Kansas City metropolitan area, including periodic travel to other states, and representing the University at other on- and off-campus events for a minimum of 10 to 12 weekends annually.
Territory Management
- Establish and maintain a strategic recruitment plan for the Kansas City metropolitan area and surrounding counties by analyzing enrollment and census data, utilizing DESE (Department of Elementary and Secondary Education) and other relevant resources, and establishing contacts in high schools and local organizations.
- Utilize enrollment and communication software in support of enrollment goals.
- Use data to make informed decisions.
- Participate in file review of applications and recommend decisions to the admissions committee.
- Lead the partnership with Great Jobs KC and KC Scholars, supporting KC Scholars and TSU-Only Award recipients in enrolling at Truman.
Recruitment
- Serve as primary point of contact and an informational resource to prospective students, their families, and area School Counselors.
- Manage recruitment at high schools by meeting with students and staff on a regular basis.
- Represent Truman State University at college fairs and local events.
- Meet with students individually, as needed, through Zoom and at local public establishments.
- Advise students on potential scholarships and other financial assistance to help manage the cost of college; maintaining sensitivity to cultural and socioeconomic differences.
- Manage all communication within assigned territory to prospective students at all stages of the enrollment process.
On-Campus Responsibilities
- Assist on campus during all events, including Truman Experience Weekend, Admitted Student Events, Top Scholarship Interviews, and Orientation.
- Assist on campus during heavy visit weeks, such as high school spring break, if travel schedule permits.
Event Planning and Assistance
Coordinate all aspects of various student and family receptions in the Kansas City metropolitan area: including a senior kick-off reception in the late summer and a spring event for high school juniors and seniors and their families.
Alumni Relations
- Establish and maintain a strong working relationship with the Kansas City Alumni Chapter.
- Support and attend various local alumni events.
- Include local alumni in various Admission events.
- Work closely with Office of Advancement to expand alumni engagement and reach.
Mentorship and Training
- Provide mentorship of new professional staff tasked with recruitment responsibilities, specifically to regional counselors transitioning to remote duties.
- Design and schedule mentorship and training opportunities in coordination with Assistant Director of Recruitment to amplify recruitment, communication, and event efforts of regional and office-based admission counselors and coordinators.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Considerable evidence of transferable technical skills.
- Exceptional communication skills (written and oral).
- Strong commitment to customer service.
- Ability to work in a collaborative environment within the Admission Office and the University as demonstrated by previous supervisory, project management and/or group work.
- Record of success independently completing assigned projects with limited direct supervision and the ability to take direction from office leadership.
- Ability to travel and to assume a work schedule that can include evenings and weekends.
- Ability to lift/carry items ranging from up to 40 pounds in weight.
- Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
- 1+ year professional team management, event management, or project management experience.
- 1+ year of professional experience with college recruitment or 2+ years of professional experience in a related field such as sales or marketing.
- Knowledge of and/or experience working with direct admission/college marketing, admission recruitment communication systems and/or database management software.
- Supervisory experience.
