Lab Coordinator I, Epps and Korley Groups

Context of the Job:

The Epps and Korley Laboratories in the Departments of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering and Materials Science & Engineering at the University of Delaware are currently comprised primarily of postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and undergraduate students who primarily focus on the design, synthesis, and characterization of natural and synthetic polymeric systems, leveraging experience in chemical engineering and materials science towards applications in sustainability, personal protection, energy, and human health. Under the general direction of Epps and Korley, and interacting closely with the Associate Scientist, the Lab Coordinator will work independently to resolve hurdles and pursue new opportunities that are both technical and operational in nature. The Lab Coordinator will be instrumental to the collection, interpretation, and reporting of data by lab members. They will interact with students, administrators, and external vendors and partners to help ensure the efficient operation of research, training, and reporting activities associated with the Epps and Korley labs.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and manage operational activities in the Epps and Korley Labs providing support services and guidance to researchers, faculty, students, and technicians.
  • Assist with data collection and processing, including various lab instruments/equipment.
  • Oversee safety training and on-boarding/off-boarding processes.
  • Prepare essential materials for research participants and maintain open lines of communication.
  • Demonstrate correct use of laboratory apparati and instrumentation to researchers and staff as necessary. Train researchers on laboratory equipment as required.
  • Maintain standard laboratory equipment, which may include troubleshooting and making minor repairs with or without departmental shop assistance; ensures equipment is in safe working order.
  • Purchase and stock the lab with general research supplies on a weekly basis as requested by the lab members and in accordance with the labs budget.
  • Perform financial allocations in the appropriate university system on the required timetable and reconcile monthly expenditures.
  • Coordinate and enforce lab cleanings and chemical inventory management, supply reorganization, and setup of new spaces as needed.
  • Manage record retention process.
  • Promote and provide direction as it relates to workplace safety, manages EHS compliance. Interface with EHS for all safety inspections, and required actions dictated by EHS and the department safety officer.
  • Schedule equipment maintenance as needed.
  • Monitor instrument calendars for usage and ensuring appropriate maintenance is performed and documented by lab members.
  • Attend group meetings to learn the basics about our science and group culture.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with three years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Firsthand knowledge of laboratory techniques, procedures, and instrumentation common to chemical engineering and materials science laboratories.
  • Experience in administrative roles in academic or laboratory settings preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills, including task/project management and scheduling.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact and work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community and rapidly changing technical environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments, to analyze and solve problems, and to prioritize, plan, and organize work.
  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe, and use of web interfaces, with interest in and willingness to learn new software for research and communication.

Special Requirements:

  • With or without assistance, must be able to routinely lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires dexterity in handling delicate and hazardous materials.
  • Ability to accurately discern colors and accurately measure laboratory materials.
  • May require the ability to come to campus quickly in response to emergency needs.
  • May require a valid vehicle operator’s license and evening and/or weekend working hours on-campus.
