Job Summary:
The Micro-Nanotechnology Lab Coordinator will support the School of Science, Math & Engineering by facilitating microscopy instruction, maintaining advanced laboratory instruments, and assisting with micro/nanotechnology education initiatives. This position will conduct AFM, SEM, and TEM demonstrations during the week-long Introduction to Microscopy and Fabrication Summer Workshop and support laboratory exercises in the Accelerated Microscopy Summer Program. The coordinator will oversee microscope upkeep, prepare lab spaces for instruction, and ensure safe and effective lab operations. The position works standard SLCC business hours, with adjustments as needed to support program activities and student needs and reports directly to the Principal Investigator.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Conduct AFM, SEM, and TEM demonstrations during workshops and instructional programs.
- Facilitate laboratory exercises for the Accelerated Microscopy Summer Program.
- Oversee microscope operations, routine maintenance, and scheduling of service needs.
- Prepare laboratory spaces, equipment, and materials for instruction and research activities.
- Maintain organized equipment logs, usage records, and inventory documentation.
- Ensure adherence to laboratory safety procedures and operational protocols.
- Assist faculty, staff, and students with microscopy- and fabrication-related activities.
- Support day-to-day lab operations to ensure a safe, reliable, and learning-focused environment.
- Adjust work schedule as needed to support program activities, workshops, and student needs.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Knowledge of chemistry, physics, materials science, or related scientific principles.
- Knowledge of or interest in microscopy techniques.
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment with minimal supervision.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in maintaining records and equipment logs.
- Skill in troubleshooting laboratory equipment and coordinating maintenance needs.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with students, faculty, staff, and external partners.
- Proficiency with laboratory instrumentation, digital tools, and relevant software.
- Ability to manage time, organize tasks, and follow through on responsibilities reliably.
- Ability to support a safe laboratory environment and follow established safety practices.
- Enthusiasm for research, microscopy, and supporting student learning experiences.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
- Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
Minimum qualifications:
- Ability to work standard SLCC business hours with occasional adjustments for program needs.
And
- Associate's degree in chemistry, physics, materials science, or a closely related field and 2 years of full-time related work experience (part-time experience considered on a prorated basis).
Or
- Bachelor's degree in chemistry, physics, materials science, or a closely related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior laboratory, research, or instructional support experience in micro- or nanotechnology environments.
- Familiarity with laboratory safety procedures and equipment upkeep.
- Demonstrated interest in microscopy, materials characterization, or microfabrication techniques
