Lab Specialist

Lab Specialist position in a research lab focused on the impact of hypoxia on rodent behavior and molecular markers for inflammation and oxidative stress. Applicant will consult with supervisor on lab protocols and experimental design, but will then work independently on research projects. Applicant must have experience working with rats, and preferably with rodent behavioral assays. Applicant must be proficient in lab techniques such as ELISA, westerns, flow cytometry, cryostat sectioning and immunohistochemical staining. Applicant must be able to read experimental protocols and set up new assays in the lab with minimal supervision. Applicant should have experience with analyzing data, conducting statistical analyses, and reporting data to senior lab personnel in a timely and organized manner. Applicant should be able to communicate clearly on experiments conducted and data generated. Experience with ordering through USHOP is a plus. Experience with literature surveys and assessing new protocols to be used in the lab is a plus.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

1. Oversee the training of junior lab techs in the laboratory.
2. Confers with senior laboratory personnel regarding the procedures and techniques to be followed in conducting research and recommends modifications as needed.
3. Assists with and trains others to conduct tests and procedures according to laboratory protocols.
4. Assists with and trains other in routine maintenance and cleanliness of lab areas.
5. Assists with and trains other to conduct literature reviews to obtain abstracts and information to be utilized in research.
6. Assists with and trains others to make statistical calculations, analyzes data and prepares reports summarizing results.
7. May assist with and train others to supervise the care of research animals or collect tissue for laboratory analysis.

Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking, standing, sitting. Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry or other scientific discipline or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); two years full-time laboratory experience; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required. Working knowledge of advanced scientific techniques and procedures as well as the ability to make statistical calculations, analyze results, prepare reports and perform specialized tests also required.

Preferences

Prior experience with rodent behavior is preferred, especially with assays for cognitive function. Prior experience in ELISA, PCR, flow cytometry, westerns and immunocytochemistry is preferred. Prior experience working independently in a research laboratory setting is preferred.
