LABORATORY ANIMAL TECHNICIAN 2
Under general supervision, maintains sanitation & feeding program for animals; maintains record system for animals & supplies; assists Supervisor, staff & research workers with animal programs; acts as lead worker over Laboratory Animal Tech 1 and Laboratory Animal Aide. Exposure to animal bites and animal diseases, laboratory animal urine, feces and blood, dust, water and occasional steam. Exposure to sanitation chemicals. Weekend and holiday work required.
- Adheres to all OSHA and/or Ohio University required safety guidelines.
- Adheres to all federal, state, local and Ohio University policies, procedures, guidelines and regulations regarding animal research
- Maintains sanitation programs for animal cages, equipment & housing systems
- Feeds & waters animals
- Plans & supervises work schedules of students & employees
- Manage breeding schedules and colonies
- Provides specialized technical assistance
- Observes, records & reports data on assigned animals & maintains record system for assigned area
- Responsible for ordering & receiving equipment and supplies for department
- Assists research staff with animal programs in assigned area; may set up laboratories, repair instruments, issue chemicals, supplies & animals; administers medication & collects specimens
- May conduct general public tours
- Performs other related duties as required
Minimum Qualifications:
- Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification and 18 months experience
- Advanced working knowledge of inventory & supervision
- Skill in restraint devices, basic animal procedures and ability to understand and follow programs of animal care
- Read and write common vocabulary in sentence structure
- Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, calculate fractions, decimals and percentages
- Ability to apply principles to solve practical problems
- Ability to carry out instructions in written, oral, and pictorial form
- Work independently or with others
- Willingness to foster a welcoming and respectful workforce and community
- Knowledge of all applicable OSHA and/or Ohio University safety guidelines and procedures
- Lift up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis
- An established pattern of good work habits and performance with good interpersonal skills.
