The University of Maryland, Baltimore Department of Neurobiology in the School of Medicine has an opening for a contractual Laboratory Research Assistant. The ideal candidate will be familiarity with surgical aseptic techniques and USDA Pain and Distress Categories.

Primary Duties:
- Perform routine laboratory maintenance and research activities such as: general housekeeping, wipe tests, immunohistochemistry, and histology analysis, preparing solutions, executing biochemical procedures. Participate in the design of research studies. Prepare rats for surgical procedures and perform the post-surgical observation.
- Perform advanced laboratory research activities such as: animal surgery, cannulation, and microinjection. Microscopy techniques, imaging techniques, etc.
- Compile and analyze research data using various relevant computer software applications.
- Perform administrative duties such as: training and guiding graduate students; assisting in developing their thesis and doctoral projects, ordering supplies and interfacing with vendors.
- Assist with literature research, editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations, and computer graphics for publication. Review grant proposals.
- Prepare and maintain IACUC and lab protocols.
- Provide inventory and inspection correspondent.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree in biology or field of science related to the research of the laboratory (addiction and social behavior).
Preferred Experience: Prior laboratory experience is preferred. Experience with histology analysis, colony breeding, and maintenance of rats is preferred.
Other: May consider a combination of directly related experience and education. May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. In instances where specific education and/or experience is required only directly related education and/or experience may be substituted.

Hiring Range: $44,948 up to $46,813, Commensurate with education and experience
