SUMMARY

SUNY Brockport is accepting applications for a Laboratory Safety Training and Chemical Hygiene Manager. This is a full-time, 12 month position that has two specific and distinct responsibilities. The first focuses on laboratory safety training while the second centers on chemical hygiene and waste oversight. Additionally, the Manager will report directly to the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences while coordinating with the Director of Environmental Health and Safety.

JOB FUNCTIONS

Essential Functions:

Laboratory Safety Training Responsibilities:

  • Leads the operational administration of the institution's laboratory safety training program through the use of the CITI platform.
  • Consults with each department representative, manages the assignment of modules based on role type and departmental specifications, track participation, and ensure training pathways align with grant compliance, onboarding cycles, and course-based participation.
  • Maintains training records and prepares annual institutional reporting that supports departments, the Office of Human Resources, and the Office of Sponsored Research and Programs.
  • Coordinates closely with academic departments, the Office of Human Resources, and the Office of Sponsored Research and Programs to embed training expectations into faculty hiring and student employee onboarding processes.
  • Identifies gaps in coverage, proposes workflow improvements, and develops user-friendly training guidance to support full participation and institutional alignment.
  • Provides coordinated support to ensure laboratory personnel are trained before active engagement in teaching or research environments, thereby minimizing institutional risk and instructional disruption.
  • Provides support for supervisors of student employees by contributing to training coordination, communication, and documentation. May also supervise an administrative assistant assigned to support the program's logistics.
  • Supports externally funded research personnel or academic programs with nontraditional schedules. Such assignments would be scoped and approved separately.

Chemical Hygiene Responsibilities:

  • Ensures that all faculty, staff, and student workers receive appropriate laboratory safety training upon hire and annually thereafter, in coordination with the CITI program responsibilities above.
  • Conducts and documents inspections of chemical storage locations at frequencies required by regulation and institutional policy.
  • Ensures that all hazardous waste generated from individual laboratory operations is properly labeled and stored in designated satellite accumulation areas in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • When waste is ready for removal from the laboratories, coordinates directly with faculty members to confirm proper waste characterization and ensure it is accurately logged into the Sciences hazardous waste storage facility.
  • Maintains and regularly update the department-specific chemical inventory, including tracking of high-risk substances.
  • Evaluates proposed chemical orders or new experimental processes requiring prior approval to ensure safety controls and storage capacity are adequate.
  • Works with faculty to develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) addressing safety and health considerations specific to departmental laboratory operations.
  • Acts as the primary point of contact for department-specific questions related to chemical usage, storage, and safety procedures.
  • Conducts periodic inspections of departmental laboratories to verify adherence to the Chemical Hygiene Plan and applicable regulations.
  • Reviews laboratory accidents with faculty to ensure that appropriate incident reports are filed and corrective actions are implemented.
  • Ensures laboratory safety equipment (e.g., spill kits, eyewash bottles, PPE, first aid supplies) is up to date, properly stocked, and maintained in each individual lab space.
  • Serves as the liaison to the Chemical Hygiene Officer and the Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) to coordinate hazardous waste disposal pickups for the Sciences.
  • Participates in the annual review of the Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) to assess its effectiveness and recommend updates as needed.
  • Assists EHS with the planning and coordination of laboratory cleanouts and laboratory decommissioning to ensure safe disposal of chemicals and decontamination of lab spaces.
  • Provides updates on laboratory compliance status to the Dean and collaborate with the Dean to address and resolve any department specific safety or compliance concerns.
  • Serves as the Chair of the Laboratory Art and Studio Safety Committee.

REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, or a STEM discipline by time of appointment from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of education or an internationally recognized college or university
  • Professional experience in laboratory instruction, science education, or training program administration
  • Extensive understanding and application of safety practices in teaching laboratories and academic lab operations
  • Demonstrated experience with managing or coordinating training programs or learning management systems
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Must be able to pass and maintain all required certifications needed for the indicated job duties within 30 days of hire

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Chemistry, Instructional Design or related laboratory-centered STEM discipline
  • Familiarity with SUNY institutional structures, sponsored research training needs, and onboarding protocols
  • Prior experience working with CITI Program or similar safety training platforms
  • Active engagement with laboratory safety initiatives and professional science organizations
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a laboratory safety culture and accessibility in STEM learning environments

Work Schedule: 37.5 hours/week: Monday-Friday, 8 am-4 pm
