Laboratory Specialist
Job Description
To effectively support the teaching/research/field laboratories by (a) maintaining an accurate inventory of supplies, chemicals, and equipment; (b) maintaining and monitoring laboratory and storage spaces for safety, efficient function, and optimal use; (c) effectively supplying teaching and research laboratories with requested materials; (d) supervising work-study/volunteer students and assisting graduate instructors with biology laboratory sections; and (e) monitoring management of departmental resources as required by departmental budgetary processes. These services are provided within the Department of Biological Sciences, to other departments within the University setting and to external institutions.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Demonstrated knowledge of general laboratory procedures and equipment and analytical techniques in Biology, Chemistry, or related sciences. Working knowledge of operation of diverse laboratory equipment such as pipettor, pH meter, autoclave, hoods, distillation units, vehicles, and field equipment. Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to conduct a variety of laboratory techniques and procedures in a laboratory or field study setting. Demonstrated ability to interpret and follow instructions, both verbal and written. Demonstrated ability to use Windows-based word processing, databases, spreadsheets & other software applications to create reports, manipulate data, etc. Demonstrated ability to wear a half mask respirator according to OSHA requirements for personal safety. Demonstrated ability to effectively multi-task and prioritize workloads. Demonstrated ability to lead and direct the work of others.

Level and type of experience
Some experience working in Biology, Ecology, Chemistry, or a related science laboratory to include setting up or performing various tests or experiments. Some experience working with computer applications such as word processing, databases, and spreadsheets.
Additional Considerations (supplemental knowledge, skills, abilities, education, experience, licensure, certification)
Working knowledge of working with wet labs and working with BSL2 pathogens. Demonstrated ability to maintain inventory control. Some experience working in higher education. Some experience supervising employees.
Conditions of Employment
This position requires a valid driver’s license. The selected candidate will be required to provide a valid transcript of your driving record which must be received within 30 days of the accepted offer of employment.
Annual Salary/Hourly Rate
Salary is commensurate with education and experience and begins at $ - 35,000
