Laboratory Technician

Basic Function and Responsibility

The Laboratory Technician - Autopsy and Forensic Services can be assigned to perform functions in Autopsy Services and Accessioning, Provide Clerical/Administrative Support, Laboratory, Office of Decedent Affairs, and Other Duties.

Autopsy Services and Accessioning

  • Accession autopsy cases with accuracy.
  • Prioritize daily activities including tissue and specimen running.
  • Access and navigate systems to accession cases and request information.
  • Assist in problem solving for cases.
  • Work with laboratory personnel to process cases efficiently.
  • Assist during autopsy procedures.
  • Perform autopsy photography when requested.

Provide Clerical/Administrative Support

  • Answer phone calls and document as needed.
  • Scan, organize, and file documents.
  • Communicate effectively with staff and maintain confidentiality.
  • Manage inventory and stock supplies.

Laboratory

  • Perform and document daily maintenance.
  • Monitor reagents and supplies.
  • Perform general lab upkeep such as cleaning and handling biohazards.
  • Maintain work area in a clean condition.

Office of Decedent Affairs

  • Prepare and transport decedents for viewing.
  • Follow up with funeral homes.
  • Support Decedent Services Programming.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Other Duties

  • Fulfill departmental continuing education.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required: High school diploma. Requires frequent standing, walking, sitting, and lifting up to 50 lbs.

Preferred: Bachelor's or associate degree with equivalent experience. Reasonable knowledge of laboratory methods. Previous autopsy or mortuary experience.

Working Conditions

Works with infectious disease and/or hazardous materials. May have exposure to noise from laboratory equipment. This is a full-time, 40-hour position on the day shift with rotating holidays, weekends, and on-call.
