Assistant Professor in the Law and Justice Program

The School of Liberal Arts in the Faculty of Arts at Laurentian University invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for an existing tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Law and Justice Program. The preferred start date is July 1, 2026.

The successful candidate should have the following essential qualifications:

  • A doctorate in a relevant discipline such as law, political science, history, or philosophy with an orientation to legal studies or a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline and a LL.B/J.D. Some Formal legal training would be considered an asset.
  • An ability to teach and research in a number of the core areas of the program such as, but not limited to: legal research and theory, criminal law, administrative law, Indigenous law and theory, or constitutional law and theory, at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The program encourages diverse and interdisciplinary approaches to legal studies.
  • A commitment to pedagogical and academic excellence, promoting a safe, inclusive, and welcoming learning environment, and advancing Laurentian University’s bilingual and tricultural mandates. Evidence of very good research and scholarship with the potential to work collaboratively with colleagues, secure funding support, and build internal and external interdisciplinary or intersectoral collaborations.
  • Commitment to promoting a diverse, inclusive, and vibrant academic and work environment.

In addition to active engagement and participation in teaching and research, the successful candidate will be expected to make contributions through service to the School, Faculty, University, and broader community. An on-campus presence is expected.

The School of Liberal Arts focuses on understanding the range of human experience and expression in law, culture, and language in contemporary and historical perspectives in such disciplines as English Literature, Media, and Writing; French as a Second Language; Law & Justice; and History. Professors contribute to the Interdisciplinary M.A. in Relational Studies and the Ph.D. in Human Studies and Interdisciplinarity. Our faculty are leading scholars, advancing their fields through publications and collaborations, while cultivating students’ analytic and expressive skills that equip them to be outstanding thinkers, communicators, creators, and innovators.

Laurentian University, located on Atikameksheng Anishnawbek territory in Sudbury, Ontario, serves over 8000 students and is one of two bilingual universities in the province of Ontario. Committed to its bilingual, tri-cultural mandate, Laurentian University offers an outstanding university experience in English and French with a comprehensive approach to Indigenous education. Laurentian’s beautiful, forested campus is surrounded by fresh-water lakes, conservation lands, and hundreds of kilometers of cross-country and hiking trails while situated in the geographic centre of Greater Sudbury, northern Ontario’s major urban centre (population 160,000).
