Summary of Position: The primary purpose of the LEA Skills Instructor at Red Rocks Community College (RRCC) will be responsible for delivering high-quality, professional training in defensive tactics, the use of impact weapons, and other law enforcement-related subjects in accordance with the philosophy, policies, and procedures of both the Colorado Community College System (CCCS) and RRCC. This position plays a key role in ensuring students meet the Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification requirements and prepares law enforcement professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in their careers.

The instructor will be responsible for preparing and delivering comprehensive, accurate, and engaging course content, ensuring that students receive timely feedback and meet the required learning outcomes. The instructor will also support program development, assist with class and event coordination, and actively participate in the evaluation of training curricula. Additionally, the role will involve maintaining effective communication with students, peers, and staff, fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment, and contributing to the broader goals of the department and college.

Part-time Instructors provide instructional duties for the College in their respective areas of expertise. They report to the LEA Director and do not have any supervisory responsibilities. Responsibilities include instruction, student assessment, and other related instructional duties. Instructional delivery may include face-to-face, hybrid, and online. Classes may be held days, evenings, and weekends. The skills instructor must be patient and respectful, while also providing their expectations for what is considered acceptable work. The skills instructor must display dedication to the class as well as the goals of the program.

This posting will be used to fill multiple part-time Instructor vacancies. The finalist must be willing to make Colorado their primary workplace, including online courses. Please note, at this time, that the hours of this position are limited to 72 hours a session, two times a year (144 total hours).

Qualifications:

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge and/or experience with curriculum and teaching strategies to meet the needs of diverse populations.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with the use of instructional technology including classroom application distance learning.
  • Evidence of incorporating technology into classroom instruction.
  • Experience/familiarity with assessment of student learning, instructional effectiveness and/or adult learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups of people.
  • Problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Displays a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment towards completing assignments in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office products, D2L, and other computer software as necessary.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, Political Science or a closely related field.
  • At least two thousand (2,000) hours of verified occupational experience in the discipline within the last seven (7) years. The institutional knowledge of a former criminal justice professional does not change substantially over a period of 15 years of relevant experience, and therefore tested occupational experience is permitted over that time period, as long as the applicant has been involved in teaching, working as a volunteer, reserve, mentor, or some other related field, during the previous 15 years.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in criminal justice from an accredited institution.

Physical & Cognitive Demands: The following are some of the physical and cognitive demands commonly associated with this position. Constantly uses a computer and routinely uses standard office equipment including phones, copiers, etc. Cognitive demands include comparing, copying, computing, compiling, analyzing, coordinating, synthesizing, negotiating, communicating, instructing, and interpersonal skills. This is not a sedentary position. The person in this position constantly communicates with internal and external constituents and students. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. Occasionally moves, positions, and transports classroom and office equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 lbs.

Starting Pay: The compensation for this position is $76.60 hourly, commensurate with education and experience. This is a part-time, FLSA exempt position and may work up to 28 hours per week, depending on budget and need. However, at this time, this position is limited to 72 hours a session, two times a year (144 total hours). This position has been exempted from the State Classified System.
