Essential Job Duties:
Are you a skilled carpenter ready to take the lead in a dynamic and collaborative environment? NC State University is looking for an experienced Lead Carpenter to join our Carpentry Shop within the Building Maintenance and Operations department. In this role, you'll oversee inspections, coordinate campus-wide maintenance efforts, and perform complex carpentry projects that directly support the quality and functionality of our university facilities.

Key Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
- Conduct building inspections related to windows, walls, doors, floors, ceilings, handrails, ADA features, and other structural components
- Coordinate and schedule maintenance work by communicating with building liaisons, supervisors, utilities teams, department heads, and campus occupants
- Manage daily operations within the Carpentry Shop, including flooring, walls, glass repair, cabinet and countertop work.
- Perform advanced-level carpentry work, including construction and repair of metal and wood stud wall systems, drywall installation and finishing, ceiling systems, flooring, cabinetry, and countertop installations
- Complete detailed trim work; hang doors, drill and set door hardware, install partitions, set windows, and modify or remove walls using hand and power tools
- Read and interpret blueprints and construction documents to ensure work is performed to design specifications
- Demonstrate knowledge of remodeling trades, including practices, procedures, materials, tools, safety standards, quality control, and cost management
- Monitor AIM system reports to track labor and material costs; collaborate with management to address variances and ensure accuracy
- Review project plans, prepare cost estimates, and order materials for a variety of carpentry and maintenance tasks
- Specialize in water damage remediation and restoration to maintain structural safety and appearance
- Conduct regular safety inspections of workspaces, vehicles, and tools, ensuring compliance with hazardous materials and safety regulations
- Promptly report any accidents, injuries, or policy infractions in accordance with university procedures
- Safely use various types of ladders and lift, carry, or move items weighing between 50 and 90 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public
Other Work/Responsibilities:
- This position has been designated as essential personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule
- This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor
- Assists other trades as required
Minimum Experience/Education:
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the Trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Required Qualifications:
- Working knowledge of the standard practices and methods of the carpentry trade
- Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public
- Understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters
- The primary functions of the position require the ability to lift and carry up to 60 pounds frequently and up to 90 pounds occasionally, with or without a reasonable accommodation
Preferred Qualifications:
- Working knowledge of the standard practices and methods of the carpentry trade
- Experience working in a university setting performing advanced level carpentry skills to include repair, installation, and fabrication of various carpentry-related functions (ceiling, floors, doors, frames, glass repair, repair of classroom furniture, hardware, and water damage remediation & restoration)
- Knowledge and experience in water damage remediation and restoration
- Able to plan, schedule, and oversee maintenance and construction tasks.
Required license or certification:
- Must have valid driver's license
- Must be able to obtain a valid NCDL within 60 days of hire & must be maintained
