The Lead Solution Architect provides enterprise-level architecture leadership, overseeing the design and communication of high-level solution structures that enable and guide the development of integrated, secure, and scalable technology solutions across multiple portfolios and domains. This role is accountable for defining and shaping UNSW’s future-state technology landscape, ensuring alignment with the University’s digital transformation strategy and long-term business objectives. The position provides authoritative advice and strategic recommendations based on deep specialist expertise, influencing technology direction, standards, and investment decisions at an enterprise level. The role is accountable to the Head of Solutions in their respective Domain and works in conjunction with the Technology Managers, Enterprise Architect and Program/Project Managers. The role will have direct reports.

Specific accountabilities for this role include:

  • Be the Lead Solution Architect for a range of domains and own the end-to-end solution outcome for specific domain requirements as well as major cross-functional and university-wide initiatives.
  • Mentor and guide other Solution Architects in the team, providing best practice, direction and advice for achieving the best outcome and uplifting architecture capability across portfolios.
  • Partner with our Enterprise Architects and Engagement Teams to ensure Strategic Alignment or initiate new strategic directions where necessary to support enterprise-wide transformation and future-state architecture objectives.
  • Drive alignment with our internal infrastructure teams as well as vendors, to define the requisite infrastructure environments.
  • Contribute to the development of Procurement Strategy, RFx and evaluation criteria and provide strategic input into technology investment planning and resourcing decisions.
  • Partner with our Business Analysts to understand customer requirements and lead their articulation as functional and logical designs.
  • Prepare and present solution architectures to architecture review boards.
  • Oversee and facilitate technical steering groups as part of formal or informal consultancy / project agreements.
  • Collaborate with the Enterprise Architecture competency centre to establish and apply standard methods, tools, templates, processes and practices.
  • Use appropriate tools and frameworks, including logical models of components and interfaces, to develop systems architectures in specific business or functional areas and where required, across multiple portfolios.
  • Produce detailed component specifications and translates these into detailed designs for implementation using selected products
  • Provide specialist advice on technical aspects of system development and integration (including requests for changes, deviations from specifications, etc.) and ensures that relevant technical strategies, policies, standards and practices (including security) are applied correctly.
  • Oversee technical teams to optimal solutions to meet business requirements.
  • Review others' systems designs to ensure selection of appropriate technology, efficient use of resources, and integration of multiple systems and technology in line with enterprise architecture principles.
  • Make substantial contribution to policy for selection of architecture components and act as the custodian of architectural standards, policies and compliance mechanisms across the University.
  • Evaluate major design options, leading impact analysis and risk assessment, with consideration of broader University-wide impacts where applicable, in making solution recommendations. Ensure that the system design balances functional, service quality and systems management requirements.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values.
  • Ensure hazards and risks psychosocial and physical are identified and controlled for tasks, projects, and activities that pose a health and safety risk within your area of responsibility.

Who you are:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification as well as a minimum of eight years’ professional experience in software development including at least three years’ in a Solution Architecture role.
  • Well-developed solution architecture and system design skills.
  • Extensive experience of Industry recognised architectural frameworks.
  • Demonstrated understanding of procurement practices.
  • Deep understanding of various delivery lifecycles and where and why they should be used.
  • Strong understanding of Cloud, Managed Service and on-site deployment and integration architectures.
  • Integration architecture experience including iPaaS, API Gateways, ETL, ESB and related technologies
  • Understanding and knowledge of ERP platforms.
  • A well-developed appreciation of the relationship between Solution Architecture and Enterprise Architecture.
  • Strong presentation skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to structure and articulate messages to different audiences at all levels.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, ensuring that the underlying problem is understood and a robust approach / solution is developed.
  • Recognised as a subject matter expert, able to give specialist advice to others and with experience of driving technology change.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work with different levels in an organisation.
  • Ability to maintain knowledge of leading and emerging practices in Solution Architecture and provide detailed advice regarding their application and execution in practice.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
