Learning Commons Associate - Science Center (Chemistry)
Job Summary
Reporting to the assigned campus leader, the Learning Commons Associate provides front-line customer service to students, employees, and the public at the TCC Learning Commons. The Learning Commons Associate is responsible for cross-training in multiple areas with the ability to assist with clerical, customer service, learning lab, library, and other professional duties throughout the Learning Commons. This position has general requirements for all Learning Commons Associates and specific functional area responsibilities.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
General: Serves as a resource to students, faculty, staff, and the community to enhance learning and engagement while supporting multiple functions and spaces within the Learning Commons. Provides guidance on relevant resources. Oversees the front desk, including appointment scheduling and communication. Monitors the Learning Commons to ensure user behavior policies are followed. Inventories and orders materials, ensuring safety practices.
Library: Serves as a resource for identifying sources of information. Makes resources and tools available, assists with technology questions. Answers questions and resolves technical issues. Locates materials and assists patrons. Maintains maker space hardware and software. Provides check-in and check-out services. Assists with maintaining the Library website.
Learning Support: Provides tutoring assistance to students, adheres to best practices. Provides handouts and educational materials. Offers academic coaching and mentoring. Prepares equipment for laboratory sessions. Teaches basic certification and safety courses. Prepares and delivers workshops. Partners with faculty for special events. Assists in academic boot camps.
Service Excellence: Attends work regularly, completes required training, supports the college's mission.
Supervision: Works under the general supervision of the assigned campus leader.
Required Minimum Qualifications
Level based on qualifications: Learning Commons Associate I requires high school diploma or equivalent; Associate II requires Associate's degree and two years' experience; Senior requires Bachelor's degree and two years' experience, or equivalent combinations.
Preferred Qualifications
College education beyond minimum; Degree in Chemistry or related field with relevant courses; Experience teaching/tutoring science courses; Experience in a science laboratory; CRLA training or similar certification.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of customer service principles. Skilled in customer service, active listening. Ability to apply critical thinking, learning strategies, and service orientation. Ability to communicate effectively.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Physical demands include sitting, using hands, reaching, talking, and occasionally lifting up to 10 pounds. Work environment may involve moving parts and electrical shock, with a usually quiet noise level.
