Learning Commons Associate - Writing Center
Job Summary
Reporting to the assigned campus leader, the Learning Commons Associate provides front-line customer service to students, employees, and the public at the TCC Learning Commons. The Learning Commons Associate is responsible for cross-training in multiple areas with the ability to assist with clerical, customer service, learning lab, library, and other professional duties throughout the Learning Commons. This position has general requirements for all Learning Commons Associates and specific functional area responsibilities.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
General: Serves as a resource to students, faculty, staff, and the community to enhance learning and engagement while supporting multiple functions and spaces within the Learning Commons. Provides guidance on relevant resources. Oversees the front desk, including appointment scheduling and communication. Monitors the Learning Commons to ensure user behavior policies are followed. Inventories and orders materials and supplies.
Library: Serves as a resource for identifying sources of information. Makes resources and tools available, assists with technology questions. Answers questions and assists with troubleshooting technical issues. Locates materials and assists patrons. Updates and maintains maker space hardware and software. Provides check-in and check-out services and maintains the Library website.
Learning Support: Provides tutoring assistance to students, adheres to best practices. Provides handouts and educational materials. Offers academic coaching and mentoring. Prepares equipment for laboratory sessions. Teaches certification and safety courses. Prepares and delivers workshops. Partners with faculty for special events and assists with academic boot camps.
Service Excellence: Attends work regularly, completes required training, and supports the college's mission and values.
Supervision: Works under the general supervision of the assigned campus leader. Performs other related tasks as required.
Required Minimum Qualifications
Learning Commons Associate I: High school diploma or equivalent. Learning Commons Associate II: Associate's degree and two years' related experience. Learning Commons Associate Senior: Bachelor's degree and two years' related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
College education beyond minimum requirements. At least one year's experience in a college Writing Center, teaching/coaching ESOL/ESL, or teaching/coaching college-level writing/reading.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of customer service principles. Skilled in customer service, active listening, and critical thinking. Ability to apply learning strategies, work with a service orientation, and communicate effectively.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Physical demands include sitting, using hands, reaching, and occasionally lifting up to 10 pounds. Work environment may involve exposure to moving parts or electrical shock, with a usually quiet noise level.
