About the role
This is an exciting opportunity for a design engineer to continue evaluating and developing a spinal fusion implant that we have invented to address the challenge of subsidence. The applicant will also have the potential opportunity to be a founding member of a spinout. The role will include designing, manufacturing, and mechanically testing prototype devices with the aim of progressing our technology from TRL3 to TRL4. Pre-clinical data will be collected to demonstrate readiness for a clinical trial.
What you would be doing
You will be involved in designing and manufacturing prototypes, performing mechanical testing to evaluate the technology (both standard ASTM testing and using bespoke testing methodologies designed to prove the technology's efficacy), and preparing for a patent application.
What we are looking for
An applicant with:
· Mechanical/Biomechanical/Design Engineering background (1st or high 2:1 degree)
· An interest in medical devices
· Experience conducting biomechanical experiments
· An interest in entrepreneurship
What we can offer you
You will benefit from joining a vibrant, multidisciplinary team with access to expertise across a range of fields. We are looking to appoint someone with strong experimental skills to participate in the different cutting-edge projects that happen in our research group. The post will be based in the open and collaborative Spine Biomechanics Group (newsfeed), which brings together scientists, engineers and clinicians to address interdisciplinary challenges in spine biomechanics research.
More specifically we can offer you:
· The opportunity to develop a technology to a point where it is ready for clinical trial
· Freedom to propose new ideas and concepts to address clinical challenges
· The opportunity to work closely with spinal surgeons on developing a device
· The opportunity to work with engineers who have previously spun-out companies that have been acquired by major players in this sector
· The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution
· Sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 38 days off a year)
Further information
The post is full time and fixed term for 12 months.
Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £41,694 - £44,888 per annum.
