Position Overview
Screenwriting instructor
Screenwriting instructors will lead one or more sections of introductory to intermediate Screenwriting courses, which may include: THEATRE 5331 “Screenwriting,” FILMSTD 4800 “Story Development for Film and Television,” FILMSTD 4880 “Screenwriting and the Business of Cinema,” and FILMSTD 4881 “Screenwriting and the Business of Television.”
Screenwriting classes prepare students to develop original stories, scripts, and screenplays for production as works of moving-image art. Coursework integrates creative practice with critical study, developing skills for writing for the screen in a variety of forms and formats. Students garner a foundational understanding of screenwriting and storytelling conventions, and hone a distinct voice in their writing. Students also gain critical professional experience for careers in film and television writing.
Instructors will lead students through multiple stages and concepts of storytelling and screenwriting, including character, story, and script development; the process of creating a cinematic world; writing and pitching film scripts and screenplays of different lengths, genres, formats; understanding aspects of the business of screenwriting.
Semester-long screenwriting courses meet in person for 80-minutes per day, two sessions per week; specific meeting times vary by assignment.
Performance Objectives
- Communicate and collaborate with faculty supervisor(s) to carry out course activities and objectives as outlined in an approved syllabus.
- Lead all course meetings and support students’ achievement of the following learning objectives
Education and Experience Requirements
Required: Advanced Degree (MFA, MA, PhD) in Screenwriting, Film and Media, or comparable field/graduate degree.
Desired: Teaching experience, preferably at the undergraduate level.
