Role overview

The University of Hull’s Doctoral College provides strategic leadership for postgraduate research education and researcher development across the institution. It ensures that postgraduate researchers receive a high‑quality, inclusive and coherent training experience that meets institutional priorities, funder requirements and external regulatory expectations.

The University is seeking to appoint a Lecturer and Programme Director (0.6 FTE) to provide academic leadership for its Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma in Research Training. This senior academic role combines leadership of an institution‑wide postgraduate programme with teaching, scholarship, mentoring and contribution to doctoral student support and governance.

Academic leadership, teaching and programme delivery

The postholder will provide strategic and academic leadership for the Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma in Research Training, ensuring academic quality, coherence and enhancement across all Level 7 provision. They will design, deliver and assess teaching using appropriate methods, communicate complex conceptual material to diverse audiences, and contribute to curriculum review and development informed by evaluation, metrics, student feedback and external benchmarking.

Scholarship and professional practice

The postholder will contribute to scholarship and pedagogic development in research education and researcher development, demonstrating innovation, impact and dissemination through appropriate outputs, presentations and sector engagement. They will be expected to be establishing a national reputation in their area of academic or professional practice.

Leadership, mentoring and team working

The role includes academic leadership of staff contributing to the programme, including coordinating teaching teams, contributing to workload planning, mentoring colleagues and supporting professional development in postgraduate research education. The postholder will work collaboratively across Faculties and professional services, contribute to institutional committees and working groups, and support interdisciplinary and cross‑institutional activity.

Doctoral education and researcher development expertise

The postholder will demonstrate extensive knowledge of postgraduate research education, researcher development and relevant national frameworks, including the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers and UKRI requirements. They will contribute to institutional strategy, quality assurance, monitoring and enhancement of PGR provision.

Doctoral student support and regulation

The postholder will contribute to doctoral student support across the research degree lifecycle, advising on complex and non‑standard cases such as suspensions, extensions and progression matters. They will provide academic oversight of special and non‑standard doctoral applications, ensuring decisions are fair, consistent and academically robust in line with University regulations and external requirements.

External engagement and representation

The postholder will represent the University internally and externally in matters relating to postgraduate researcher training, contributing to recruitment, outreach, partnerships and sector networks, and supporting the University’s profile in doctoral education and researcher development.
