Job Details

The Department of Geography at the University of Florida, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, invites applications for a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure track Lecturer/Assistant Instructional Professor position in Geographic Information Science and Geographic Artificial Intelligence (GeoAI), beginning in August 2026. We seek a dedicated and innovative instructor who will substantially contribute to the department’s instructional mission and key focus areas in GIScience and GeoAI. The expected teaching load three courses each fall and spring and two in the summer. The appointment is renewable and eligible for promotion; applicants should be committed to long-term growth and excellence in instruction and program development as this position is not transferable to a tenure track research appointment.

Primary responsibilities include teaching a sequence of foundational and advanced GIS courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Foundational courses will cover essential concepts in mapping, spatial data structures, and geospatial analysis, using proprietary and open-source GIS platforms. Advanced courses include GIS Programming (Python & Java) and Web GIS, with attention to rapidly growing technologies such as cloud-based development environments, high-performance computing, and Large Language Models.

Courses will be designed to build progressively from core skills to advanced applications, complementing existing course offerings and ensuring students are well prepared for professional and research opportunities. The instructor will be expected to maintain high-quality training while balancing the needs of large-enrollment and classroom-based software courses. Faculty in Geography also contribute courses to UF Quest and the CLAS Beyond120 programs, both of which are encouraged with this position. Additional duties include contributing to program and curriculum development, certificate administration, research mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students, outreach and recruitment, and engagement with university resources such as GeoPlan and HiPerGator.

The University of Florida is an R1 university ranked nationally as the #7 public university by US News & World Report. UF supports dynamic cohorts of 45,000 undergraduate students and 19,000 graduate students. The university is home to the HiPerGator 3.0 Supercomputer and HiPerGator AI, one of the most powerful GPU-enabled AI systems in U.S. higher education.

The Department of Geography has 21 active faculty members, with excellence in teaching and research across a broad spectrum of focus areas. It offers BS/BA, MS/MA, and PhD degree tracks, including online and distance learning options for coursework. The department offers minor and certificate programs in GIScience and GeoAI, and also has two instructional computer labs and an immersive classroom featuring an OmniGlobe. UF provides access to Windows based software applications via the online computing environment UFApps—including ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, GeoDa, and ENVI—from any computing device, at any time.
