Lecturer (BA (Hons) Music Business)
Lecturer (BA (Hons) Music Business)
The School of Contemporary Music, within the Faculty of Performing Arts, seeks to appoint a dynamic educator and business-focused researcher to teach the BA (Hons) Music Business programme.
The programme is designed to develop commercially focused, analytically rigorous and entrepreneurial graduates equipped to operate within the local, regional and global music economies. The curriculum integrates academic inquiry with industry practice, emphasising market strategy, business model innovation, cultural and creative industries and data-informed decision-making.
Reporting to the Programme Leader (BA (Hons) Music Business), your key responsibilities include designing and preparing lectures and seminars, teaching and delivering research-informed and industry-relevant content to ensure that students’ learning objectives are met. You will work collaboratively across the programme and faculty to strengthen curriculum design, align academic standards with industry expectations and support the programme’s growth and strategic positioning.
You should have teaching and/or professional experience in music business, entrepreneurship, cultural economics or related disciplines. You will be expected to teach modules that bridge academic frameworks with applied business practice, including market analysis, strategic planning, venture development and performance evaluation. This includes guiding students in using industry tools such as audience analytics, revenue forecasting, intellectual property strategy and digital market positioning.
You should be experienced in designing module briefs, constructing scaffolded learning pathways and delivering content that integrates theory with application. A key emphasis of the role is enabling students to translate research into actionable insights, develop viable business strategies, identify market opportunities and critically evaluate the sustainability of creative ventures. You will play a central role in supervising independent research projects, including final-year dissertations, with a strong focus on applied and practice-informed research.
You will also contribute to building and maintaining relationships with industry partners, supporting live projects, consultancy-style engagements and opportunities for students to test and validate business ideas in real-world contexts.
Your profile should demonstrate a strong research background, with an active portfolio aligned to business-oriented inquiry within the music or creative industries. This may include areas such as market strategy, digital ecosystems, cultural economics, audience development or entrepreneurship. Familiarity with MBA-level frameworks, such as market analysis and business strategy, innovation management and organisational performance, would be an advantage.
Industry experience in the music sector, particularly in business development, artist management, rights management, data analytics or commercial strategy, will be an asset.
You should be committed to developing graduates who are capable of operating at the intersection of art and commerce, analysing complex market environments, formulating strategic responses and contributing meaningfully to the evolution of the music industry.
Requirements
- Postgraduate qualification, preferably at PhD level, in a relevant field such as music business, business administration, cultural economics, entrepreneurship or related disciplines.
- At least five years of tertiary-level teaching experience in a relevant subject area and at least four years of full-time industry experience in the music industry, creative industries, or broader business sectors (e.g. consulting, strategy, digital platforms or entrepreneurship).
- Demonstrated ability to teach and supervise business-oriented academic work, including research methodologies, market analysis, strategic planning and dissertation or capstone projects with applied industry focus.
- Experience in delivering content that bridges academic frameworks and commercial practice, including areas such as business model development, market strategy, audience analytics, revenue streams and intellectual property strategy.
- Teaching qualification or equivalent pedagogical development is an advantage.
- Strong analytical, critical thinking and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex business and research concepts into accessible and applied learning experiences.
- Ability to engage students across a range of delivery modes, including lectures, seminars, workshops and project-based or consultancy-style learning environments.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across disciplines and contribute to programme development, curriculum design and strategic initiatives.
- Strong pastoral care and student mentorship capabilities, particularly in supporting students’ academic progression, research development and professional readiness.
- Active engagement in research, with a preference for candidates who demonstrate a business-oriented research profile in areas such as market strategy, cultural and creative industries, entrepreneurship or digital ecosystems and the ability to mentor emerging researchers.
- Industry-relevant experience in the music sector (e.g. artist management, label operations, rights management or live/events) would be an advantage.
