LECTURER (MA MUSIC THERAPY)
The School of Creative Industries is seeking to appoint a full-time lecturer for the MA Music Therapy programme.
The MA in Music Therapy is a newly developed and innovative programme informed by the evidence-based and ethical use of music within therapeutic relationships. It responds to increasing demand for creative therapies in Singapore and the region, and aligns with the professional framework of the Association for Music Therapy, Singapore, and relevant international standards.
As the first of its kind in Singapore, this two-year programme prepares musicians for careers as music therapists across a wide range of settings such as community facilities, schools, hospitals, care homes and private practice. Drawing on theoretical and practical developments in the field, students will be provided opportunities to learn how to use their musical skills to deliver potentially life-changing interventions across various age groups from preschool children to the elderly.
An essential feature of the programme is the use of structured and supervised clinical placements throughout the course of study. Application to practice allows students to translate complex theory and emerging research into meaningful, relevant and context-specific practice, further allowing students to discover their own style of practice aligned to established standards, ethics and guidelines.
We are seeking a passionate, experienced and credentialed music therapist and educator with expertise in teaching core courses in music therapy across multiple cohorts. Reporting to the Programme Leader, you will primarily teach the programme—key responsibilities include academic preparation, teaching and delivering the programme to meet students’ learning outcomes. You will also contribute to clinical placement learning and supervision. Your role also involves working collaboratively with colleagues to support the School’s strategic goals.
You will also coordinate academic learning activities, liaise with part-time staff, conduct assessments, mentor students and participate in student recruitment.
You will demonstrate a deep commitment to student learning and development, a strong foundation in both professional practice and academic teaching in the field of music therapy, and an evidenced awareness of current and emerging critical discourses in areas important to music therapy at national and international levels. You are also expected to engage in research and/or professional practice that contributes to the development of the discipline and enhances student learning.
The successful candidate will be a credentialed music therapist and educator with an established track record of clinical experience, research and pedagogy. You will bring an innovative and responsive approach to the application of music to therapies designed to increase and support mental well-being and health.
Requirements:
- Postgraduate qualification in music therapy is required, preferably at PhD level, with a minimum of a master’s degree. A professional qualification in music therapy is essential.
- Professional credentials to practice as a music therapist, with established professional recognition in Singapore.
- At least five years of full-time tertiary or equivalent teaching experience, and a minimum of three years of relevant professional experience in music therapy, with substantial clinical experience.
- A passion for teaching and experience in pastoral care, with a demonstrated ability to support and inspire students from diverse backgrounds.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills, and a collegial, team-oriented mindset.
- A positive attitude towards research, with an active or emerging research profile preferred, and demonstrated commitment to ethical, culturally responsive and research-informed practice.
