The Department of Sociology and Anthropology invites applications for one full-time teaching faculty position in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the rank of Lecturer. The expected start date can be as early as July 15, 2027.
Duties
The successful candidate will have prior experience teaching core sociological courses such as Introduction to Sociology, Sociological Theories, and Research Methods, and capacity to teach elective courses in areas such as global sociology, social movements and social policy, technology and society, and health and wellness, as demonstrated through course outlines, prior teaching evaluations, and their CV. The workload comprises teaching 8 courses over three semesters, Fall, Spring and Summer, though the Collective Agreement provides for at least one non-teaching semester every three years. The successful candidate will teach at both our Burnaby and Surrey campuses.
In addition, the successful candidate is expected to participate in the collegial governance of the department and the university and service to the academic community.
Qualifications
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Sociology at the time of appointment. Excellence in teaching is the primary criteria for this position. We seek a candidate who has an established record as an outstanding instructor, and who possesses demonstrated experience in face-to-face classroom instruction, developing and delivering online courses, and curriculum development. The successful candidate should demonstrate the ability to conduct research and demonstrate currency in their discipline.
The successful candidate will have experience teaching a diverse student body, use innovative pedagogical approaches to creating engaging learning experiences for students and to assessing student learning, and will be proficient in using classroom technology and learning management systems (e.g., Canvas). They should also have a record of, or potential for, administration and service contributions to the university and community.

Faculty salaries at SFU are based on the salary scales bargained between the University and the SFU Faculty Association. The current salary ranges are based on the 2022-2025 SFU/SFUFA Collective Agreement. A reasonable estimate of the salary range at the Lecturer rank is $98,340 - 114,241 per annum, based on qualifications.
This is a junior faculty position; only those holding or those eligible to be appointed to the rank will be considered. This position is subject to the availability of funding.
