Lecturer (Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist)

We are seeking passionate and dedicated Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapists with expertise and experience in working with either children with speech, language and communication needs, or adults with acquired speech, language, communication and swallowing disorders.

Come and join our friendly and highly skilled multidisciplinary team working within the new, innovative Health, Wellbeing and Care Hub at the University of Essex. These posts offer varied and exciting new opportunities and have been created to extend and enhance the delivery of speech and language therapy services from the Hub and within the local area. The successful candidates will work as part of our MDT and actively engage in service planning, with the aim of delivering evidenced-based interventions that benefit the children and adults in our care. They will also focus on workforce development, offering high quality practice placements and clinical supervision, and contribute to the assessment of students on clinical placement within the Hub including SLT students and wider MDT professions, developing the future workforce through creative and innovative opportunities.

The roles will provide experience in working within an MDT, delivering care to either children or adults with a range of speech, language and communication presentations, as well as offering regular CPD opportunities and personal development with a focus on wider workforce development.

Main duties of the role

The post-holders will:

  • Provide assessment, diagnosis and therapeutic interventions to either children or adults with developmental and acquired communication and swallowing disorders, using evidence-based practice.
  • Plan, implement and evaluate treatments, and work closely with other disciplines in devising joint-working programmes for children, adults, families, carers and groups.
  • Liaise with relevant care professionals and agencies, and external partners.
  • Develop clinical educator and supervision skills and provide high-quality clinical placement opportunities for student practitioners at the University of Essex.

A full list of duties and responsibilities can be found within the jobpack. These are part-time, fixed-term posts until 31 December 2026. Please note that appointment to this post will be made as Lecturer.

Skills and qualifications required

Applicants should have Professional experience or practice equivalent to relevant doctoral level research degree or have or be close to completion of PhD and HCPC registration as a Speech and Language Therapist. Substantial experience in providing evidence-based impactful service provision to either a diverse group of children with developmental speech, language and communication needs or adults with acquired language and communication disorders is essential.

Due to the nature of the work, applicants who are offered employment will be subject to an Enhanced DBS before the appointment is confirmed.
