Job description
The Department of Mechanical Engineering currently includes 45 professors and 7 lecturers, supported by 35 technical and administrative staff members, along with several postdoctoral fellows, researchers, and research professionals. The department offers programs in mechanical and aerospace engineering and contributes to the biomedical and engineering programs, serving a study body of more than 1,200 undergraduates and 300 graduate students. Professors, researchers, and students conduct leading-edge research in mechanical, aerospace, metallurgical, energy, and biomedical engineering, in collaboration with industry.
The department is seeking a lecturer to contribute to the bachelor’s program in aerospace engineering. The successful candidate will play a key role in the theoretical and practical training of students destined to work in the aeronautical and space sectors. The selected candidate will actively participate in teaching, supervising student projects and the pedagogical development of specialized courses, in collaboration with the department’s faculty. Expertise and the ability to teach and develop courses in one or more of the following fields are sought:
- Flight mechanics and performance of aeronautical systems;
- Orbital mechanics, attitude control, and propulsion of space systems;
- Design of aircraft and space vehicles;
- Test engineering, validation, and certification of aerospace systems;
- Integrative projects in aerospace engineering.
Polytechnique Montréal also benefits from a vibrant ecosystem of student technical societies related to aerospace in the broadest sense. Oronos designs and launches high-power rockets, PolyOrbite develops CubeSat-type space projects, Zénith specializes in drones and remotely piloted aircraft systems, while PolyLoop is designing a magnetic levitation vehicle inspired by the Hyperloop concept. Avion Cargo tackles aircraft design challenges. These multidisciplinary projects demonstrate students’ sustained commitment to innovation in advanced transportation and aerospace engineering.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will carry out the responsibilities associated with this position with energy and creativity. In particular, the candidate will be expected to:
- Develop, teach, and coordinate undergraduate courses in the aerospace engineering program;
- Demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching;
- Propose and supervise integrative projects for the aerospace engineering program;
- Participate in the organization of aerospace engineering and mechanical engineering programs;
- Initiate and contribute to the development of pedagogical innovations;
- Support the department in the program accreditation process;
- Participate in developing relationships with institutional and industrial partners to ensure the relevance of aerospace engineering courses and integrative projects;
- Contribute to various administrative functions at Polytechnique in line with their expertise and qualifications, and to other duties assigned by the department chair as needed;
- Participate in service activities for the academic and professional community, and society.
Profile and job requirements
Candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Hold at least a master’s degree in engineering or the equivalent in a relevant field;
- Have teaching experience at the university or college level;
- Demonstrate excellent teaching skills, as evidenced by teaching evaluations;
- Be able to contribute positively to the department’s work environment and adhere to Polytechnique’s values of excellence, creativity, integrity, collaboration, respect, and openness;
- Hold an engineer’s license from the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) upon starting the position or be able to obtain it shortly thereafter;
- Have sufficient proficiency in spoken and written French upon starting the position, as the language of instruction at Polytechnique Montréal is French.
Polytechnique Montréal will provide the necessary assistance and support to the selected candidate for OIQ registration.
