SALARY

£41,732 - £46,974 (Grade J); £48,350 - £54,395 (Grade K) per annum

The role

The University of Bristol is announcing significant investment in new academic staff posts to grow our talented Computer Science community. This investment is underpinned by recent successful activities, including two new Doctoral Training Centres in Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity, Isambard-AI – the UK's most powerful supercomputer – a multi-million pound Bristol-led AI research hub in Collective Intelligence, and an entirely new enterprise campus with facilities, labs, and collaboration spaces.

As part of this growth, we wish to hire an outstanding candidate for a lectureship in Algorithms and Complexity. Our steadily growing Algorithms and Complexity research group is internationally recognized for their work on algorithms and lower bounds in the fields of sublinear algorithms, randomized algorithms, graph and string algorithms, and parameterized and fine-grained complexity. We are looking for an ambitious theorist with a proven track record of high-quality publications whose ambition is to develop and pursue their independent research agenda. We offer a vibrant research environment with opportunities for collaborations with the members of the Algorithms and Complexity group as well as with the world-leading academics in the school of Mathematics. We will consider applicants from all subfields within Algorithms and Complexity research.

This post will be at the Lecturer level with a salary between £41,732 – £54,395 per annum, depending on the candidate's skills, qualifications, and experience.

What will you be doing?

  • As a Lecturer, you will pursue personal research, disseminate findings, and engage in impactful activities beyond academia.
  • You will deliver engaging teaching, supervise projects, and build and contribute to research programmes.
  • You will design courses, guide student assessments, and foster academic growth.
  • You will be a member of the Algorithms and Complexity research group and the Core teaching team, which focuses on theoretical subjects and core Computer Science skills.
  • You will have further opportunities to work with researchers in other theory disciplines, e.g., Programming Languages and Cryptography, with the school of Mathematics, and beyond as appropriate.

You should apply if

We seek individuals with a proven track record of high-quality research in Algorithms and Complexity whose ambition is to develop and pursue their individual research agenda.

You should be enthusiastic about implementing innovative teaching methods and supporting students at all levels to achieve their potential.

Our commitment to diversity and inclusion is paramount, and we expect candidates to cultivate diverse relationships within and outside the University.

A PhD in a related field or extensive equivalent industry experience is essential.
