Lecturer in Bioinformatics

The School of Natural Sciences at Birkbeck is looking to appoint an exceptional lecturer in bioinformatics. Key areas of interest include machine learning/deep learning approaches, systems biology, proteomics or spatial transcriptomics.

You will be part of a vibrant team of researchers in the natural sciences at Birkbeck, and with links to UCL through the ISMB, seeking to explore fundamental characteristics of living systems. You will benefit from an outstanding research environment, including access to our high-performance computing resources.

As a core member of our academic staff, you will contribute to the School through teaching, research, and administration. You will lead an internationally recognised research programme focussed on an area of bioinformatics and will apply for external funds to support these activities.

You will make a core contribution to our MSc Bioinformatics programme and participate in other BSc and MSc programmes related to your area, as well as supervising undergraduate, MSc and PhD research students, contribute to the organisation of teaching and research activities within the School and be active in knowledge transfer and public engagement.

To apply for this role, you will have a PhD in an area of bioinformatics, or a closely related subject, that would build and expand on the expertise in the School.

A sound working knowledge or R and/or Python is required for this role. You will also have a proven record of publishing high quality research and have experience in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.

You will also have an understanding of Birkbeck, our principles of widening participation in higher education, and working with mature age, part-time, and non-traditional learners from a diversity of backgrounds.

Specifically, you will:

  • be committed to excellence in both research and teaching,
  • be committed to providing a rich learning experience to students with a wide range of skillsets,
  • have an interest in impact generating and public engagement activities, and
  • be able to work collegially, with strong interpersonal, organizational and administration skills, to effectively manage teaching teams.

You will be an active researcher in an area directly relevant to bioinformatics and have experience in the design, delivery and convening of courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level relevant to your background.

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to give a research seminar presentation (15 minutes) and attend an interview.

This opportunity would build on prior experience in the field of bioinformatics and related areas.

Contract Permanent, full-time contract - 35 hours a week with flexible hours. Please submit a CV for consideration. Closing date: Friday, 3 July. Interview date: Friday, 17 July 2026. Visa Sponsorship available.

Salary and benefits £44,247 rising to £60,858 per annum. Grade LLEC, includes a London Weighting Allowance.
