The Faculty/Dept./Division of Childhood Education at the University of Johannesburg offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. In the professional undergraduate programmes on the Soweto campus, teachers qualify for posts in the foundation and intermediate phases of schooling. In addition to the class work, the undergraduate programme is extended by a practicum component where students spend time in a primary school that is associated with the university.
Responsibilities:
- Research and Innovation
- Actively participate in research projects, producing high-quality, peer-reviewed outputs.
- Generate research that contributes meaningfully to society and advances the field of English language and literacy education for the primary school.
- Identify and secure funding to support and sustain research activities.
- Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with national and international communities to enhance external profile and professional reputation.
- Teaching and Learning
- Supervise postgraduate students in various areas of English language education, employing effective and appropriate teaching and learning methodologies.
- Ensure the successful graduation of postgraduate students who possess high-quality competencies that advance the field of language education.
- Develop and implement innovative supervision approaches that are aligned with the University's vision and responsive to the needs of postgraduate students.
- Contribute to the management, planning, design, development, and ongoing enhancement of programme content.
- Apply knowledge gained through professional practice, research, and scholarly work to inform curriculum development, module design, and teaching delivery.
- Leadership
- Participate as an academic member who enables the department to contribute to the faculty objectives.
- Contribute to the generation of alternative income for the department through the development of short learning programmes.
- Ability to mentor and develop early-career academics.
- Competence in managing research projects and academic teams.
- Community
- Support and develop less experienced colleagues in the department and faculty to build capacity.
- Actively engage through service to the Department, Faculty, the University and the broader community.
- Design, implement, and evaluate projects that address societal needs relevant to mathematics education and/or education in general.
- Monitor and report on the societal impact of projects, ensuring alignment with the university's goals and national priorities.
Minimum requirements
- A PhD/Doctoral degree in English Language and Literacy Education
- Excellent track record as a postgraduate supervisor.
- A research track record in an English language and literacy primary school education-related field.
- Higher education teaching and supervision experience in the language education field.
- Detailed knowledge of one or more of the knowledge areas in English Language and Literacy for the primary school
