About Us

The Department of Global Health & Social Medicine is a unique, interdisciplinary social sciences Department at King’s College London founded in 2012. Its mission is to address the changing global landscape of health, disease and medicine through social science perspectives. The Department is located within the School of Global Affairs and the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy.

About the role

The Department invites applications for a Lecturer in Health Economics. For this post, we seek applicants with expertise in health economics, whose work asks questions about the social, political and economic aspects of health and illness, and who desire to work in an interdisciplinary social science and health department. We are interested in scholars from the fields of heterodox health economics as well as the critical political economy of health and who are familiar with quantitative research methods. We are also particularly interested in applicants whose work is in conversation with any of the following scholarly traditions: Critical Race Theory, Feminism, or some aspect of Decolonial Theory and Practice, as well as Critical Data Science.

The Lecturer will help the Department develop a new postgraduate taught programme in Health Economics and Policy and will contribute to the SSPP Methods Centre.

The successful applicant will have responsibility for academic and research leadership and will demonstrate leadership alongside teaching duties.

The successful candidate will have an emerging track record of publications and a clear research agenda with ideas for grant applications. They will be responsible for delivering high-quality, innovative undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. The successful candidate will also play a role in the institutional and intellectual development of the Department and undertake Departmental, School, Faculty & University administrative duties as required.

This is a full-time post (35 hours week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract, starting no earlier than April 2026.

About You

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  • PhD Degree in a relevant area of the social sciences or humanities
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of a relevant field of expertise and evidence of academic and research leadership
  • Experience of teaching relevant subjects at undergraduate level, with evidence of innovative and effective teaching and ability to engage and inspire students
  • Commitment to student learning, supporting student welfare, and enhancing the student experience
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent organisational, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to use own initiative and think critically
  • Collegiality and willingness to work as part of a team

Desirable criteria

  • Developing record of high-quality scholarly publications appropriate to career stage
  • Experience of assessment procedures in UK Higher Education and providing excellent feedback
  • Completion of appropriate training in Higher Education teaching and learning/academic practice
  • Experience of academic administration; Experience of providing academic advice and pastoral support to students
