The Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Reading, welcomes applications for two permanent Teaching and Research positions in International Relations, one with a specialism in contemporary war and conflict, and the other with a specialism in international security.

We are seeking to appoint exceptional individuals with demonstrable potential to produce exciting and innovative research and to deliver inspiring teaching within the broad field of international security. We are open to a variety of approaches to that field, but are particularly interested in receiving applications from scholars with expertise in contemporary conflict, the changing character of war, global security/order and emerging security challenges (e.g. new technologies, climate change and environmental security, cybersecurity).

The successful candidates will have an innovative and ambitious research agenda in International Security and will demonstrate the ability to produce high-quality research outputs capable of contributing to a strong REF (Research Excellence Framework) return. We are also interested in candidates who undertake policy-relevant research which has the potential for impact. A track record of attracting research funding would be an advantage.

Candidates must be able to contribute to core teaching in International Security/Relations and to offer research-led teaching in their area of specialism. An ability to teach in any of the following areas may be an advantage: international relations and international/global security, war and conflict, contemporary warfare and strategy. Successful candidates will also be expected to be active members of the department’s Centre for Global Security and Governance and to contribute to student support, recruitment, and general administrative duties within the department.

We are committed to diversity and inclusion and strongly welcome applications from LGBTQIA+ people, women, racialised minorities, and other groups who remain under-represented in the department and in academia more broadly.
