Lecturer in Mathematics

This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and collegial academic to contribute to a vibrant and interdisciplinary School with a strong commitment to excellent teaching & learning, and research growth. We are looking for a candidate with the ability to teach statistics and mathematics, including applied mathematics, across all levels of study, including Master’s provision. You will join a subject area that delivers BSc and MSc programmes, with the BSc Mathematics degree accredited by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, and with a strong emphasis on real-world application.

We are particularly interested in candidates who can combine high-quality teaching with a developing or established research profile.

Preference will be given to applicants whose research strengthens the School’s expertise in Cyber Security or Artificial Intelligence. We will also welcome applications from those whose work aligns with and complements our wider research strengths in Data, Intelligence, Simulation, and Modelling; Secure, Dependable, and Autonomous Systems; or Quantum, Materials, and the Physics of the Universe.

Applicants should make clear in their application how their research complements existing School strengths.

At the University of Hull, we are proud of our commitment to excellence in both education and research. We have been recognised with a TEF Gold award and consistently high National Student Survey results, reflecting our dedication to delivering an outstanding student experience and supporting student success. Our teaching is informed by discovery, innovation, and a strong sense of purpose.

The University is also known for research that tackles major global and societal challenges. Our strengths include clean energy, flood resilience, cancer and wound care, and the fight against modern slavery. We are a university that seeks to make a difference, regionally, nationally, and internationally, and we are looking for colleagues who want to play their part in that mission.

In this role, you will contribute across teaching, research, and academic citizenship. You will teach in a variety of settings, from tutorials and workshops to larger lectures; design and develop teaching materials and assessments; support and supervise students; and reflect on and enhance your teaching through feedback and continuous improvement. You will also be expected to develop your own research agenda, contribute to collaborative research activity, publish high-quality outputs, engage with conferences and external networks, and pursue funding opportunities where appropriate.

The successful candidate will work closely with colleagues on curriculum development, module delivery, and the wider academic life of the School. You may be expected to act as Module Leader and to contribute to collaborative decision-making on teaching, assessment, and research activity.

Candidates should have strong academic credentials and the ability to contribute to both taught and research-led activities within the School. Candidates will be required to undertake the University’s Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice if not already qualified.

For an informal discussion about the role, please contact Professor Kevin Pimbblet, Head of School, at k.pimbblet@hull.ac.uk.
