About us

The position will be based at the King’s India Institute in the School of Global Affairs, part of the Faculty of Social Science and Public Policy. Established in 2011, our mission is to serve as a world-leading centre for multi-disciplinary research, teaching and public engagement on contemporary India.

The India Institute forms part of the Global Institutes at King’s that specialise in research and teaching across regions of the global south. They include the Africa Leadership Centre, Brazil Institute, Lau China Institute, India Institute, and Menzies Australia Institute in the School of Global Affairs, and the Institute of Middle Eastern Studies and Russia Institute in the School of Politics and Economics.

We host the MSc Global Affairs, a degree taught collaboratively between the Global Institutes, and from 2028 onwards the Global Institutes will also be home to a new BA in International Politics and Technology.

About the role

We are seeking to recruit a Lecturer in Politics and Technology to address current and projected increases in core teaching provision, both for the current MSc Global Affairs, and for module development and delivery for a new BA International Politics and Technology.

The ideal candidate will conduct outstanding research on themes related to political economy broadly defined, including the role of technology in shaping political, economic and development outcomes, with a specialisation in India. They will strengthen our core teaching provision in modules including Introduction to Global Affairs and Introduction to Research Methods, with a particular focus on quantitative methods and the integration of AI-based approaches. Going forward, they will also design and deliver an undergraduate module on a theme related to the political economy of technology in the global south for the BA International Politics and Technology, and will contribute to methods teaching for the BA International Politics and Technology.

This is a full time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract subject to a period of probation (usually 3 years).

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  • PhD in a social science or relevant discipline
  • Expertise in the political economy of technology in the global south with a specialisation in India, as demonstrated through PhD or post-doctoral research expertise in the politics or political economy of technology in the global south with a specialisation in India, as demonstrated through PhD or post-doctoral research
  • Excellent track record of publications and research grants (appropriate to career stage)
  • Expertise in advanced quantitative and/or qualitative research methods, including AI or machine-learning based approaches.
  • Ability to design, deliver and assess teaching at postgraduate and undergraduate level, with a demonstrable commitment to inclusive student learning, supporting student welfare, and enhancing the student experience
  • An interdisciplinary mindset in education, and aptitude for working within an interdisciplinary setting, including teaching across disciplines and regions, and beyond the immediate field of expertise
  • Collegiality and willingness to work on own initiative and as part of a team in planning and delivering teaching and in the discharge of administrative duties

Desirable criteria

  • Track record of successful grant capture
  • Expertise in quantitative research methods
  • Experience of designing and/or teaching modules on the political economy of technology or related themes.
  • Experience of teaching research methods.
  • Experience of routine academic administrative or leadership roles
