Base salary: $112,572.59 - $133,381.10 + 17% superannuation (Academic Level B)

About This Opportunity

We are seeking a lecturer with a strong background in teaching and research in urban planning, particularly in one or more of the following areas: planning law and regulatory frameworks, master planning, statutory planning, urban management and governance, and infrastructure planning (e.g. water, energy, digital).

In this role, you will teach courses at both the Bachelor and Master of Urban Planning levels. Responsibilities include course coordination and supervision of higher degree by research (HDR) students. You are expected to develop and maintain strong connections with the planning profession, government agencies, and industry partners. This collaboration ensures our programs remain innovative, applied, and relevant.

You will participate in interdisciplinary and collaborative research initiatives and build a research program aligned with the School of Architecture, Design and Planning’s key research areas.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching

  • Develop new urban planning programs and course materials in consultation with advisors and stakeholders.
  • Deliver engaging and current content across various settings.
  • Coordinate courses, deliver lectures, and assess student work.
  • Apply innovative curriculum design (including online and alternative methods).
  • Support students academically and apply university teaching policies.

Research

  • Build an independent or collaborative research program with national recognition.
  • Collaborate on joint projects and funding applications, often as a chief investigator.
  • Secure and manage external research funding.
  • Maintain a strong publication record in high-quality journals and conferences.
  • Use best practice research methodologies and engage in project discussions and reporting.

Supervision and Researcher Development

  • Supervise honours and HDR students.
  • Oversee staff recruitment, onboarding, performance, and professional development.
  • Manage employee-related matters in collaboration with Human Resources.

Citizenship and Service

  • Build partnerships with colleagues, industry, government, and the wider community.
  • Provide mentorship and leadership through internal and external service roles.
  • Support administrative duties and maintain alignment with UQ values.

About You

  • Completed PhD in urban planning or a closely related discipline
  • Growing profile in urban planning teaching and research, with expertise in one or more of: planning law and regulatory frameworks, statutory planning, urban management and governance, infrastructure planning (e.g. water, energy, digital)
  • Emerging track record of publications and conference presentations
  • Proven experience securing and managing research funding
  • Demonstrated high-quality teaching at all levels across varied formats (e.g. online, in-person)
  • Experience in course coordination and curriculum innovation
  • Record of supervising honours and HDR students to completion
  • Internal service experience and contributions to external engagement
  • Strong professional network across planning, government, and industry
