The Midwifery Program in the Department of Family Practice at the University of British Columbia invites applications for the position of full-time Lecturer (1.0 FTE) to be part of the Vancouver Fraser cohort for a one-year term with a possibility of renewal, located at the Surrey site.

UBC's Midwifery Program was established in 2002 and is the sole educational program for midwifery in British Columbia. The program resides within the Department of Family Practice in the Faculty of Medicine. It offers a four-year entry to practice baccalaureate program, an advanced placement program for registered nurses, as well as a bridging program for Internationally Educated Midwives and a nationally known Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Program.

The Midwifery faculty consists of 17 full-time academic faculty, two dozen adjunct faculty, and approximately 200 clinical faculty members. Midwifery coursework is available through videoconferencing with clinical placements spread across the province. The baccalaureate program, accredited by the Accreditation Council of the Canadian Association for Midwifery Education until February 2027, has cohorts and faculty on the UBC campus in Vancouver, Fraser Health (Surrey), and Vancouver Island (Victoria).

Working under the direction of the Director of the Midwifery Program and Associate Director, Midwifery Undergraduate Education Program, and reporting to the Head, Department of Family Practice, the successful candidate will be responsible for clinical teaching in hospitals, clinics, homes, and other community settings throughout the year, including during UBC academic and class breaks.

The successful candidate will work closely with UBC clinical preceptors, midwifery practices, hospitals, and health authorities to enhance client care and increase clinical placement capacity for midwifery students. The successful candidate will provide direct supervision to one or more midwifery students, depending on the practice site and client needs, and will be expected to be on-site full time.

The successful candidate is responsible for supervising and teaching students, providing antenatal, postpartum, and newborn exams, orienting students to the clinic, conducting student evaluations, and consulting with midwifery clinical course tutors and leads to assess student learning needs.

The successful candidate is responsible for preparing and documenting clinical activities performed during assigned hours, consolidating the data into a monthly report, and submitting report(s) in accordance with established monthly reporting procedures, while ensuring and maintaining active ongoing engagement with colleagues and providing consistent support for student learning.

Additionally, the Lecturer may be invited to deliver guest lectures when their area of expertise aligns with the course content and attend regular schedule Midwifery faculty meetings. This position integrates both clinical and academic responsibilities as part of a teaching-focused appointment.

The successful candidate will participate in relevant service activities within the Department and will contribute to fostering an environment that promotes inclusivity and embodies values of respect, integrity, compassion, collaboration, and equity.

The successful candidate will hold a Master’s degree in Midwifery or a related field, such as Public Health or Nursing, with a preference for candidates who also have at least three years of clinical experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered. Prior experience teaching midwifery at the university level is preferred. Eligibility for registration and good standing with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives is required.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated evidence of ability in teaching, and the promise to achieve excellence in teaching. In addition, the successful candidate will have demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and interact with empathy, understanding and, respect of diverse perspectives.

The expected annual salary range for this position is $115,000 to $125,000 at the rank of Lecturer. The Faculty of Medicine is committed to offering equitable and competitive salaries, commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate.
