Job description
The school of Engineering is seeking to appoint a Lecturer (Band 8) in Mechanical Engineering with expertise in areas such as mechanical engineering design, Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Design for Manufacture (DFM), stress analysis and finite element analysis (FEA), or Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM). This appointment aims to strengthen expertise in core mechanical engineering disciplines and expand our research and teaching capacity in manufacturing and design of mechanical systems.
With increasing global demand for sustainable manufacturing solutions and operations, the department is committed to delivering high-quality education and impactful research in mechanical engineering. The post holder will work within the subject group of Mechanical Engineering contributing to research and teaching in the relevant discipline, and is expected to have knowledge, understanding and experience of delivering specialist and general course material to undergraduate and postgraduate students, from first principles, through to Masters level.
Candidates are expected to demonstrate strong academic credentials and the ability to contribute to both taught and research-led activities within the department.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities of the Post
The postholder is required to have expertise in Mechanical Engineering, with specialist knowledge, and the ability to teach at a variety of levels, in some or all of the following areas:
- Mechanical engineering design
- Computer-Aided Design (CAD)
- Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM)
- Stress analysis and/or Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
- Design for Manufacture (DFM)
Key responsibilities include:
- Delivering high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in core and specialist mechanical engineering modules.
- Supporting the continued development and innovation of mechanical engineering curricula.
- Supervising final year projects and MSc dissertations.
- Contributing to the department’s research profile through publications, grant capture, and collaborative work.
- Participating in academic administration and student support activities.
- Engaging with external stakeholders including industry partners and professional institutions (e.g., IMechE, IET).
Person Specification
Essential:
- A PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
- Demonstrable expertise and experience in some or all of the following areas: mechanical design, CAD, CAM, Stress Analysis and FEA, DFM.
- Evidence of successful teaching or demonstrator experience in relevant subjects.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to excellence in teaching, learning, and student engagement.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.
Desirable:
- Prior involvement in Mechanical Engineering or project-based applications.
- Record of research publication and/or grant applications.
- Experience in supervising undergraduate or postgraduate students.
- Familiarity with modelling and simulation tools relevant to mechanical engineering such as Solidworks (or other CAD software), Ansys, Abaqus, MATLAB/Simulink, etc.
