About Us

Come and work in London’s newest university Counselling Psychology team, teach some of the most diverse and motivated Counselling Psychology trainees and help shape your profession through teaching and research.

  • The provision at UEL has grown dynamically with a new cohort of trainees studying the Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology. We look to continue expanding with a new cohort in September 2026. This is a very exciting time to join an enthusiastic team of academics who can shape and influence the development of the growing UEL psychology provision. We would want to appoint as soon as possible.
  • We invite enthusiastic candidates who are HCPC registered and either a qualified Counselling Psychologist or Clinical Psychologist. We particularly welcome candidates who can support the development of our teaching and develop our research. Candidates without previous teaching experience but with sound Counselling Psychology clinical experience may be considered at Lecturer level if the candidate is willing to work towards a postgraduate certificate in professional education (or equivalent).
  • Candidates must have a passion for student focussed teaching, and a clear understanding and respect for the unique needs of widening participation cohorts of students.  The successful applicants will have excellent knowledge of the professional and academic requirements of higher education programmes and will contribute to the development of Counselling Psychology in the university through research and teaching.

About the Job

To contribute to the delivery and ongoing enhancement of the Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology at the University of East London. Working collaboratively with the Programme Director and wider team, the postholder will support the provision of a high-quality, research-informed and socially responsive doctoral training programme that meets the standards of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

This includes teaching across theoretical and applied components of the programme (e.g., year one CBT, year two psychodynamic, and year three integrative approaches), contributing to trainee assessment and supervision, and supporting professional and personal development through reflective and experiential learning.

For appointment at Senior Lecturer level, the postholder will also play a role in curriculum design, research development, and/or programme innovation, contributing to the strategic direction of Counselling Psychology training and research within the School.

About You

Essential criteria:

  • Doctorate in Counselling or Clinical Psychology (A/C)
  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Practitioner Psychologist (A/
  • Substantial clinical experience as a Chartered Counselling or Clinical Psychologist, post-qualification (A/I)
  • Knowledge and application of research methods (preferably qualitative, although quantitative specialism will be considered) (A/I)
  • Advanced knowledge of psychodynamic therapy and/or other psychotherapeutic approaches e.g. CBT (A/R/P)
  • (Senior Lecturer only) Substantial experience of teaching and assessing at postgraduate level (A/I)
  • (Senior Lecturer only) Substantial experience of offering research supervision to Counselling Psychology trainees or doctoral candidates in a related discipline (A/I)
