About This Opportunity

The University of Queensland’s School of Languages and Cultures is seeking a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Linguistics with expertise in Morphology and at least one other area (Semantics, Phonology, Syntax, or Sociolinguistics). Candidates with a specialisation in Australian Indigenous languages is highly desirable.

As Lecturer (Level B), you may coordinate or lead the activities of other staff and contribute to the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students. You will aspire to achieve national recognition in your field of research and demonstrate excellence in teaching and service.

As Senior Lecturer (Level C), you will leverage your established record of achievement in teaching, research, and engagement. You may lead academic initiatives and are expected to have a strong track record of successfully supervising HDR students to completion as principal supervisor.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Teaching: Develop and deliver courses, engage in curriculum design, coordinate courses, assess students, provide academic counselling, and adhere to university teaching rules.
• Research: Establish a research program, collaborate on research projects, seek and manage research funding, publish in reputable journals, utilize best practice research methodologies, and participate in project discussions.
• Supervision and Researcher Development: Supervise students, recruit and manage employees, provide performance feedback and training, resolve conflicts, and ensure correct remuneration and benefits.
• Citizenship and Service: Develop partnerships, demonstrate leadership through mentoring, engage in internal service roles and committees, perform administrative functions, provide support to colleagues, and uphold university values.

About You

Applicants should hold a PhD in Linguistics. A specialisation in Australian Indigenous languages is desirable but not essential.

For Level B you will demonstrate:

• A growing profile in teaching and research in Linguistics, specifically Morphology and one other area (Semantics, Phonology, Syntax or Sociolinguistics).
• A developing reputation and track record of publications in reputed refereed journals and presenting at conferences.
• Evidence of successfully seeking, obtaining and managing external research funding.
• Evidence of a high level of quality teaching at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate level across a variety of settings, including small and large groups.
• Experience in course coordination and contribution to the development and continuous innovation of new programs, curriculum design and course material in the discipline area.
• A growing record of supervision of Honours and Research Higher Degree students to successful completion.
• Experience in meaningful internal service roles in conjunction with active contributions to external activities.

In addition to the above, successful Level C candidates will demonstrate:

• An established profile in teaching and research in Linguistics, specifically Morphology and one other area (Semantics, Phonology, Syntax or Sociolinguistics).
• National recognition in the area of expertise, with an internationally developing profile and an established record of publications in reputed refereed journal and presenting at conferences.
• A strong record of successfully seeking, obtaining and managing external research funding.
• Evidence of a high level of quality teaching at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate level across a variety of settings, including small and large groups.
• A strong track record of course coordination and participation in the development and continuous innovation of new programs, curriculum design and course material in the discipline area.
• A solid record of supervision of Honours and Research Higher Degree students to successful completion.
• A growing record of meaningful internal service roles in conjunction with a strong contribution to external activities.
