MEDEX Northwest is the Physician Assistant (PA) program at the University of Washington (UW) and is a section of the Department of Family Medicine in the School of Medicine. MEDEX has five campuses: Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA; the University of Alaska in Anchorage, AK; Kona, Hawaii; UW Seattle; and UW Tacoma.
This position will serve the Anchorage, AK site.
Primary responsibilities
This role includes coordination, management, and supervision of MEDEX clinical year students across the program’s multiple campuses and WWAMI clinical training sites. The clinical coordinator serves as the clinical training lead at the assigned MEDEX campus and interfaces with clinical training sites throughout the WWAMI region and beyond. This is a 12-month, non-tenure track appointment.
The clinical coordinator:
- Oversees placement of students into required and elective rotations
- Maintains and develops clinical sites and preceptor relationships
- Ensures students gain core competencies and are prepared for certification and clinical practice
- Participates in didactic and clinical instruction, assessments, admissions, and accreditation compliance
The clinical coordinator must be available to participate in administrative and academic meetings, UW School of Medicine and Department of Family Medicine events, and MEDEX retreats and trainings in Seattle and across WWAMI training sites.
Supervision
This position reports directly to the MEDEX associate program director (APD) for clinical affairs.
Job responsibilities
Clinical coordination
- Enlist and maintain support for PA student education across WWAMI
- Collaborate with healthcare systems and clinics
- Schedule clinical rotations and practicum assignments
- Monitor and evaluate clinical year instruction and site teaching effectiveness
- Coordinate clinical assessments and end-of-rotation events
- Conduct site visits and complete related documentation (travel required)
- Work with other clinical coordinators on student placements
Student support, evaluation, and progress
- Evaluate student progress and clinical skill development
- Create teaching materials (written, audiovisual, digital)
- Advise students on clinical year performance and professional development
- Support students with academic and professional needs
- Grade exams and assignments
- Help plan and coordinate orientation, mid-year, and final exam weeks
Program management
- Represent MEDEX on clinical education, diversity, and health equity initiatives
- Lead and participate in clinical team meetings, retreats, and events (may involve travel)
- Participate in admissions and student selection
- Maintain awareness of accreditation and compliance requirements
- Carry out administrative and curricular duties as assigned
- Attend MEDEX faculty meetings and activities
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent
- Graduation from an accredited PA program
- Eligible for PA licensure in Alaska
- At least two years of teaching experience in a classroom or clinical setting
- Current NCCPA certification or equivalent and a minimum of two years of clinical experience
