About This Opportunity

The School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry seeks an innovative, passionate, and engaged Lecturer - Philosopher of Ethics to join our vibrant academic community. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a dynamic undergraduate Philosophy program while extending ethics education beyond the Humanities into broader professional and interdisciplinary contexts.

In this role, you will design and deliver inspiring undergraduate subjects, coordinate courses, supervise postgraduate research, and contribute to academic leadership and service. You will also build a strong and impactful research profile, advancing scholarship that responds to contemporary moral challenges and engages wider communities.

Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Teaching: Develop and deliver courses, engage in curriculum design, coordinate courses, assess students, provide academic counselling, and adhere to university teaching rules.
  • Research: Establish a research program, collaborate on research projects, seek and manage research funding, publish in reputable journals, utilize best practice research methodologies, and participate in project discussions.
  • Supervision and Researcher Development: Supervise students, recruit and manage employees, provide performance feedback and training, resolve conflicts, and ensure correct remuneration and benefits.
  • Citizenship and Service: Develop partnerships, demonstrate leadership through mentoring, engage in internal service roles and committees, perform administrative functions, provide support to colleagues, and uphold university values.

About You

Applicants must possess a PhD in Philosophy, specialising in Ethics. (Applicants without an awarded PhD in Philosophy will not be considered). Additionally, you will demonstrate:

  • Evidence of high-quality course design, coordination, and delivery of teaching at undergraduate level in Philosophy, including metaethics and applied ethics.
  • Ability to teach ethics in undergraduate and postgraduate programs outside the Humanities, in areas including Data Science, Health Science, Public Health, Biomedical Science, and Business Analytics.
  • A developing reputation and track record of high-quality publications, in Ethics.
  • Evidence of successfully seeking, obtaining, and managing external research funding.
  • Ability to be a leader in Ethics, across UQ.
  • Willingness to undertake internal service in the School, and to contribute to external service roles beyond UQ.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work as part of a team.

Desirable

  • The ability to teach existing courses especially PHIL3630 Advanced Moral and Political Philosophy.
