Lecturer Positions in Computer Science (University Teacher, University Lecturer, Senior University Lecturer)

The Department of Computer Science at Aalto University invites applications for lecturer positions in computer science. The positions of the Aalto University lecturer career system are available at the levels of University Teacher, University Lecturer, and Senior University Lecturer. The positions are full-time and permanent. We invite applications from the following three areas:
- Bioinformatics, biostatistics, and health data science
- General computer science: programming, algorithms, and theory
- Software engineering
The candidates must hold a doctoral degree in any of the areas listed above or related fields, such as Statistics or Applied Mathematics, at the time of being appointed, and they are expected to have very good teaching skills and a deep interest in teaching and working with students in higher education. We value pedagogical studies and interest in pedagogical development, as well as industry experience. Teaching at Aalto University is based on high-quality research, so we also value ongoing research activities.
As many of the courses provided by the department are fairly large, we value previous experience in organizing large courses, good communication and management skills for coordinating teams of teaching assistants as well as experience in learning analytics and the skills necessary to technically set up such courses (e.g., using automated grading tools and various learning platforms). The candidates should have a collaborative mindset in teaching and teaching development across the faculty of the Department of Computer Science as well as other (interdisciplinary) programmes offered in Aalto University. Due to the department’s teaching needs, the candidates must be able to teach both in Finnish and in English. The department is committed to fostering an inclusive environment with diverse faculty members. Therefore, applications from groups that have been underrepresented in computer science are particularly sought.
Lecturers are expected to provide and develop high-quality, research-based teaching that is accessible for students with diverse backgrounds, and create engaging, interactive learning environments for students. Lecturers will also contribute to curriculum development, mentor students, supervise theses, and participate in research in the largest computer science department in Finland.
The Department of Computer Science is among Europe’s top-20 CS departments. The annual working time for teaching and research staff is 1612 hours, of which lecturers should allocate 50-80% to teaching, depending on their level in the career system.
