Lecturer / Senior Lecture in Finance
What You Will Do
The Department of Economics and Finance invites applications for a continuing position at the Lecturer/Senior Lecturer level (equivalent to Assistant Professor/Associate Professor at North American universities). The successful appointee will be expected to make a significant contribution to both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
The University of Canterbury offers the only degree in Financial Engineering in New Zealand and has one of the very few specialised Financial Engineering programmes in the wider Australasian region. This presents a unique opportunity to help shape a distinctive curriculum that integrates rigorous quantitative methods with practical financial applications and to contribute to the ongoing development and reputation of a flagship programme within the University.
We encourage applications from candidates with a strong academic profile in:
- Financial Engineering or Quantitative Finance — the candidate is expected to have an active research agenda in the field and be able to deliver hands-on courses using facilities such as the UC Trading Room, which is equipped with Bloomberg terminals, or
- Investments — the candidate is expected to have an active research agenda in the field, and applicants with industry experience are encouraged to apply, or
- Banking — the candidate should be able to deliver courses in banking that are relevant to the New Zealand and Australian regulatory environment, or
- Fintech — the candidate should be able to deliver courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in a rapidly evolving environment.
The role will involve teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervising postgraduate research, contributing actively to the research profile of the Department and School, and participating in service activities. The ideal candidate will have a strong publication record, or evidence of potential to publish in leading finance and/or economics journals. The appointee will also be expected to make use of the School’s Trading Room as a resource for both research and teaching. The successful candidate is expected to commence employment in late 2026 or early 2027.
