Job description

We aspire to be a leading Faculty of Law and a Procedural Law Department, anchored in Africa, producing cutting-edge national and international relevant research; delivering high-calibre students who will rethink and reshape the legal landscape; creating expertise and engagement on African and world legal systems, and consolidating strategic partnerships that will stimulate intellectual growth and facilitate global reach and impact. The successful candidate will be expected to actively participate in and support the primary goals and objectives of the Faculty and the Department in pursuit of this vision and strategic objective.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach undergraduate and postgraduate modules in the various sub-disciplines and modules that constitute Procedural Law (Criminal Procedure).
  • Supervise postgraduate students in their dissertations and theses.
  • Conduct and publish research in local, international, accredited journals, book chapters, books and monographs in the field of Procedural Law.
  • Take on administrative and committee roles within the Faculty of Law and the Department of Procedural Law, the broader University of Johannesburg (UJ), when called upon.
  • Play a role of mentor to emerging staff in the Faculty of Law and the Department of Procedural Law.
  • Attract and sustain fundraising initiatives and strategies to advance teaching and research scholarship.
  • Participate in community engagement initiatives to advance societal engagement and impact.

Minimum requirements

  • A Doctoral degree in Procedural Law (Criminal Procedure).
  • At least five (5) or more years’ lecturing experience in the discipline of Procedural Law.
  • Strong publication track record in reputable and accredited journals, book chapters and books.
  • Strong commitment to research-led teaching, research and innovation.
  • Sound communication skills in English.
  • Evidence and Experience in Postgraduate supervision, including at the doctoral level and having supervised postgraduate students to completion.
  • Evidence of developing external research grant applications and success.

Recommendations:

  • Able to teach large groups of students.
  • Experience lecturing undergraduates.
  • Experience in curriculum development and Curriculum Transformation.
  • Familiarity with blended learning techniques.
  • An NRF Rating will serve as an advantage and a recommendation.
  • Experience in compiling and developing study guides.
  • Experience in media engagement and writing opinion pieces on matters relevant to the discipline.
  • Knowledge of University policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Candidates from designated groups (Black South Africans and Women) are especially encouraged to apply.

Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:

  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Excellent teaching skills and good interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to collaborate with colleagues.
  • Good planning and organisational skills.
  • Experience in the integration of ICT in teaching and learning, as well as electronic assessment techniques, e.g., Blackboard and Moodle.
  • Capacity to administer large undergraduate modules.
  • Ability to work well and collegially with others and within established processes.
  • Punctuality.
  • Knowledge of various subfields of Procedural Law.
  • Innovative, proactive, and creative.
  • Ability to work in a pressurised environment and independently (and where necessary in a team).
  • Great writing and presentation skills.
  • High level of integrity and ethical foundation.
